I'm doing a 4 speed conversion on a 69 b body...do I really need the hump?

Yes you do. You will have a huge hole without it.

Yep. You will have to cut away a section of the floor pan to clear the shifter mechanism and make clearance for the rods. The cutaway will leave a tear drop shaped hole. The hump provides room and also provides a surface to mount the shift boot.

It also keeps out engine noise, road debris, dust, fumes, etc. etc.

Very possibly the cheapest part of the conversion also.
