I measured the shaft & left room for a brick plus, as suggested above.

I then cut the tube off at a 45 degree angle to provide a larger opening for pouring the fluid in. I then let it rest in the corner of my work bench.

I did not have a brick handy, but the front yoke worked fine to provide enough weight to keep the shaft from floating.

88,000 mile car & it still had the OE u-joints, so I de-rusted them separately for display in the shop.

If you want a factory fresh drive shaft, where the original end castings are gouged off and new tubing welded on, this guy was at Carlisle 2016 and apparently does excellent work from the looks of the driveshaft he had on display:

Rob Brombacker, (734) 564-3856, rbrombacker at specproj.com

He told me that he keeps his own driveshaft looking like new by painting or spraying a solution of Cosmoline thinned about 50-50 with mineral spirits about once per year. This was what he said when I asked him if he used RPM. Here in Houston with high humidity and 50 miles from the Gulf, I will probably use both on bare steel parts.

Good job Alaskan TA. I had Rob do a driveshaft for me and it looks awesome.

Reviving an old thread based on my Evaporust endeavor.
A little trick I did to keep the shaft submerged. I screwed in a medium size threaded hook into the pvc end cap before I glued on the pipe. Just thread it in enough to grab and not pierce the cap outside. Also turn the hook so it would hold the u joint ring.

After soaking for 2 days this is what I got. Pretty nice I think.
Date code shows up clear as day, but I dont see any part number anywhere. This is an a-body shaft. Maybe I will spot something after going over with some steel wool.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid but if there is the slightest pinhole anywhere in your driveshaft there will be evaporust inside the shaft that could seep for years. Does the factory put a vent hole anywhere for heated air to escape while welding?

Sorry, didn't really intend to bring back an old thread. Jumped here from the current evaporust thread.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Mine was submerged for 2 days and had no signs of water getting inside.
Evaporust will dry to a gooey paste once water is gone. I don’t see the issue.

I have done several driveshafts with evap o rust. Both for Mopar and GM cars. Works awesome. With GM where the paint stripes will appear you have to "time it" right that you pull the driveshaft out of the bath prior to the evap o rust lifting the paint. Just takes several checks. Does a great job.
