Take the top off and pinch it in a vise. Takes a big pair of snap ring pliers and 2 hands. Should come apart to be cleaned once in awhile anyway.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

That must be an older version. Mine are not like that (I have 2). In mine there are 2 round holes to use a pin spanner wrench to hold it in place. I changed my gauge years ago and did not have an issue getting it off. I have also rebuilt mine a couple of times.

Never seen one like that before myself either. Only ones I have seen have a traditional internal snap ring. We but a quick "spanner" tool to hold the cap still to change gauge or add a fitting etc. Just a piece of round stock with a couple bolts welded to it with a small bend in it..

Make a quick spanner to hold the top still..Would not use heat as aluminum is a great conductor for heat and will surely kill the orings.

I have a Mac Tools TP56 snap ring pliers with .090" tips that work on these big rings (barely). They are quite stiff and take a substantial tool and maybe a second set of hands to get them out.
Whenever the engine came apart to be freshened, I would take the Accusump apart, clean it, fill it and charge it and use it to prime the engine just before starting. They do collect some junk over the course of a season and should be cleaned before hooking it up to a fresh engine. Obviously, if you break something, it becomes a necessity to take it apart.

I don't have any pictures of what we did. But it was simply a piece of 3/8" steel rod with two I believe 5/16" bolts welded to it. If I was in Vegas I would take a pic but I'm on the east coast. We just bent the rod in a vice to get around the gauge and welded the two bolts to line up with the two holes on top of the cap. Hope that makes sense?!?

I have a Moroso unit bought in 1990. There are no holes or provisions in the cap to turn or hold it. Have to pop the snap ring and wiggle it out to do anything with it.

Going to my local hardware store now for some 3/8 rods, but do I need the 5/16 nuts for? This thing is still fighting me. I have no idea what they put on these threads but damn.

A few seconds spent on Google confirm that newer units have two holes in the caps to enable use of a spanner to hold or turn the caps. No clue when that change was done.

I just welded bolts to the rod for the holes, faster than cutting piece of the rod off to use I guess..Apparently there are a lot of different versions of these things out here. Both of ours have holes in the cap.

Mine does not, but it's 27 years old. Two 5/16 holes could be drilled if one were careful not to go too deep.

Both of ours have holes in the cap. So, I found a long 3/8" steel rod and bent it to go into the 3/8" (2) holes into the top of the cap to hold it in place but this thing just wants to fight me. Holding the rod tight almost shaped like a hanger now going up and over the gauge, and into the holes but this [censored] won't budge.
