I belong to My Mopar and have the 71 Service manual downloaded, what am I missing?? It's a body service book did I miss a different book to download?
I even downloaded the parts manual for 70-71 and the only diagram is for a Thermoquad so It's a different fuel line to carb. Sorry for all the confusion it's Monday... Ron

Having owned a 71 I can tell you its pretty much the same except the line that goes from the pump to the carb. Comes in two pieces, hard line from the pump to the filter and from the filter to the carb. You can order a line kit but you have to specify which carb you are using. 71s didn't have Thermoquads, you'll have to order a 73-74 kit for that. There is a slight difference in the kit for the Carter AVS and the Thermoquad. heck with Fine Lines or Stainless Steel Lines. Ok found the info. in the Chassis manual but it was a Plymouth not Dodge book!!!! I think I'll live though.
Looks like there is some conflict though, per the Chassis book my fuel pump with nipple in and out is right but then in the other section it shows nipple in and fitting out. Nipple in, fitting out, would work with the reproduction steel line so do I change fuel pump and buy the line? Or just leave well enough alone. Guess I should now check if a nipple in fitting out pump is available...
Update took a long look at Rockauto and it seems the previous owner put on a low performance pump on, (nipple in and out). So the HP pump is what I would need to make this all proper.
Would you go straight to the Carter? they also list a Spectra and an Airtex in HP configuration??
Always clear as mud. Correction not as muddy now!
Thanks for all the help today guys!! Ron

For some reason. I'm thinking the 383 had the nipple in and nipple out fuel pump. Thus a lower rubber line, then fuel filter, then a hard upper line
And the 440 is a 2 piece hard line both upper and lower ?

1971 383 Magnum Carter Fuel Pump with two nipples
5/16" rubber hose inlet into fuel pump
5/16" rubber hose from fuel pump outlet into fuel filter then 5/16" rubber hose from fuel filter into steel line for either Carter AVS or Holley , steel lines are routed different depending on Carb

John's line is between upper rad. hose and wires and then between both heater hoses don't really love that. I have mine now next to front of distributor then down to filter then rubber than pump. When I looked the fuel pump up on Rock Auto I mistakenly put in 440 engine.

Word of caution on stainless steel. When fitting for the first time tighten the fitting on the carb then loosen and tighten again. Takes awhile for the SS flange to form and seal to the inlet. May leak if you don't do that. Better yet, get the steel, seals on the first try.
