well a 318/360 won't get out of it's own way compared to a 5.7/6.4. 5.2/5.9 conjurs up thoughts of blown plenum gaskets, cracked heads, bad mpg and lethargic performance at best (in magnum form). Carb form you just have to look at the trucks they're in.... Hemi's not a bad mill to work on. They definitely come in much nicer packages. I think the benefits definitely outweigh the negatives. I've seen bunches of old pickups with 5.7's pushing 250K miles.

Interesting timing . I have a 1998 Ram 2500 V10 auto 4wd. I have been thinking its nearing the time to replace it with something 'considerably' newer.
I am thinking a 2009 thru 2015 Ram 1500 quad cab Hemi auto. I am well aware its not going to pull anything close to the ease in which my V10 truck can. But No more than it gets a trailer behind it anymore. I'll be fine ( 2 or 3 times a year max )
I used to have a 4.7 Dakota. And for me a Ram with one is out of the question. A 4.7 will pull my lawnmower trailer, but no way was I comfortable towing a 22' trailer with a car on it.

My 5.7 uses about a quart every 3000 miles. Not the end of the world. Plug changes aren't that bad either, just have to find the right length socket and extension combo for the back two cylinders on the driver's side near the master cylinder and brake booster.

I wouldn't do either of them with the automatic. No low end power in them, at least with the stick they stupid things aren't shifting all over the place at every .5% grade or gust of wind. Seen one too many blown up Hemi's due to valve train problems you never saw this with a 318-360 One guy down the street from me has a blown up Daytona another guy I know has spent several thousand on repairs to his 5.7 what about the 6.4's When the 4.7's started to get old, I saw way more blown up 4.7 engines than I ever did 5.2/5.9 magnums. Now the Hemis are starting to look the same way. I would really like to find a 5.2/5.9 truck with a stick shift 4x4. With the 5.9's you almost have to undo the death flash to get it back up to par. My buddy used to have a low mile 02 2500 long box quad cab with the v10, 4x4 and stick. Was a real nice truck until he started having the usual v10 troubles with it and got rid of it. One like his but with a magnum v8 would be about the perfect truck for me.

There's a custom-built 5.9/nv3500/sct-tuned 4x4 reg cab sb available right now for $5000 obo if you want Daytona. pm me if you are interested. *Edit* Snooze you Loser: She sold it for $2800. Only had 95,000 miles and no rust. I didn't have room for it, still waiting for an 8 foot 5 speed.
