I knew it would bring up many different opinions and experiences and that's what forums are about so thankxxx again and I will get some 10w30 at NAPA when I go get my torx-15 bits I ordered. My biggest thing is that I'm testing lots of carbs on my car and some are rich till I sort em out so just looking for added protection............ thumbs

If you expect fuel dilution, I think it would be beneficial to step up to a 15w40 diesel oil. Fuel contamination happens more often in that application and the extra viscosity may help offset the thinning.

All the synthetics I've tried, NOT many, have not lead me to like them better than non synthetics shruggy work
All multi bend oils, 5w20 to 20w50 have some synthetics molicules in them to get them to be rated a different weight when cold versus hot work
If it ain't broke, don't fix it up twocents
5w20 WT Valvoline and VR 10w30 for me up

Valvoline VR 1 here. have had zero oil related issues with my 505ci using VR 1 and I just hit the 10,000 mile mark. I did use Bran Penn break in oil for initial startup on the 505 ci 3 years ago so I guess that should be mentioned as well twocents

So it looks like my "junk" shelf Valvoline tops most of the "real" oils............ work

Yeah, looks like the Valvoline conventional is real good oil. Lucas too. would like to see results of the Amsoil Dominator race oil.

Do we know all the oils he tested that didn't make the top 40. Has a joe Gibbs synthetic at #8. No Gibbs conventional or breakin oil on the top 40. Was it tested or not?

Pretty comical how adding the ZDDP to oils tested already has lowered their load carrying capacity. All the "expert chemists" adding this junk and saying how good it is they were wrong the whole time.

FWIW! the guy who did all that testing originally posted his ever-expanding test results on SpeedTalk .com and the majority of the engine builders who post there called bogus on them.

One of the issues they raised most frequently was that his test method doesn't really duplicate the conditions of what oil is expected to do in a running engine. The other is that the guy refused to post any pictures of his testing equipment.

I've read through his results and think they're "interesting", but not really the final detrmination of whether any particular oil is a good choice.

Like any posted results you have to weed through stuff but it still makes you think and my room mate has a Mitsubishi Galant w/320,000+ miles and was a ticker till he switched to Amsoil fwiw. I get bored sometimes although I'm 7-days a week busy........... laugh2 realcrazy

I know I've read a lot of testing on Diesel engine oil. I had about 10 gallon of 15/40 Napa Univeral Fleet oil gave to me. I found out it was made by Valvoline and it tested better than Delo and Rotella and that chart looks like he didn't test any Valvoline 15/40 Diesel Engine oil

Most here run too high a viscosity and too cold oil temps - to stay in their "mental" comfort zone. Latest blower motor I put together with "on the tight side clearance's" = Royal Purple full synthetic race oil - 10W30 ( which is still probably a little high ), and oil temps around 200 - 210. At idle = 25 psi and through the lights at 70psi.

I agree with Crizila. I run 10W-30 HDEO in my high mileage slant six with the original oil pump and 75 psi hemi oil spring. Even in the hottest summer weather, I have no problem getting 75 psi above 2000 RPM.

The Corvair Oil Article also recommends using HDEO with the right viscosity for engines with flat tappet valve trains. Enignes need oil FLOW and excessive viscosity just means more oil gets relieved to sump before reaching the bearings. See Engine Wear.

I run amsoil xl 5w20 in my daily beater and have since I bought it new 10 years ago. When I get my 440 back together I intend to run amsoil z-rod 10w30. On paper, it looks good in terms of the additive package for a flat tappet cam engine. I only do 1-2 oil changes per year on my daily driver with the extended life oil. I burn no oil between changes but it's a modern engine only 10 years old so I don't think that's any sort of a relevant comparison to an old flat tappet engine.
