I decided to check my fuel pump push rod while I'm replacing the fuel pump on a 70 440+6. It looked ok, but since I had a new Mancini push rod, I decided to install the new rod. It went it part way, but is tight, and won't come back out. Is it normal to be that tight a fit? Thanks

It's supposed to fit nice and slippery like with some oil on it.

Remove it and reuse the old known good one, they don't normally wear out

Ah yes....... The BB fuel pump pushrod.

Another one of those parts that was never an issue for like 35 years.

Then at some point....... Became a semi-problematic part.

I just found out from Mancini that their push rod is 1 to 2 thousandths oversize from stock. Maybe some push rod bores are worn.

Don't bother with the new rod use the old one or buy an old one. There were a batch of unhardened or just plain junk steel ones around. I will post a pic of the junk M.P. rod that was in my hemi. I found a few old ones from the 60's in a local parts store that is what I'm running now. A member here McCannix did have some new old stock rods he was selling. They would be good ones.

No opinion on the fitment but for sure get an NOS one or one that you know is good metal.

The MP ones were junk.
I had one wear out on the dyno.

The problem is, they often rough up the eccentric on the cam when they fail...... Then you're kinda screwed.

If the Mancini ones are truly .001-.002 oversized....that would fall into my "that's just dumb" file.
If they thought there was a need for an oversized one...... It should be an "option", not the only way it comes.
And there should be some paperwork, or notice on the packaging stating its oversized.

As stated, the best bet is often to find a nice used factory one.

Still have a few left from an old Chrysler warehouse depot.
Several well known engine builders like to use these.
Even $ less than the Mancini ones

Today, I removed the Mancini push rod, cleaned and greased up my original rod, installed the new pump, cranked the motor to fill the carbs, then fired her up and adjusted the float levels. Good to go now. Thanks for all your input!

Since I looked my original push rod over well, and found it to be good. I decided to use it, but I will keep the NOS rods Terry has ( as long as they last ) in mind for any future need.

I keep the push rod in the photo below in my Road box. Is there a way that I can check it to see if it's one of tbe good ones? I find it hard to believe that the Mancini piece might not be good. Looks like the Mancini piece has an MP part number. Thanks in advance.

First thing I would be worried about is the obvious rust on the pushrod. As for good or bad - unless you have it checked for hardness and size - you just don't know.

The one I have is sealed in plastic. I figure that if I ever need it, that I could hit with it a scotch Brite pad and be good to go. Determining hardness, we'll I don't have something readily available to determine that. Hopefully I'll have another one soon. Interesting topic. I'm learning a great deal.
