Was wondering if the double roller timing chain in my 440 is usable. The set is only a couple of years old and will be for a street car.
When I measure across the top of the chain with a caliper and turn the bolt back and forth, not allowing crank to move, I'm getting about .040" play.
When I move one side of the chain while holding the other side tight, I can move it about .375" side to side.
Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

That's not terrible. It can be reused. What you really want to check is how much change there is in crank motion, by looking at your timing marks when you bump it end to end against the cam. That will be your valvetrain motion and ignition timing change. 6-8 degrees is about max. Less is always better.

Run it. New chains get a certain amount of slop FAST...like in a few hours run time. What you described isn't bad.

Just make sure when you're dialing in the cam that you're turning the engine over by the crank and in a clockwise direction so it keeps tension on as it would when running. You want the slop on the left side.

I shoot for .250 slop each way (in and out from center )maximum on the slack side with everything in place on street motors, if it exceeds that I replace it up

Thanks everybody for your inputs.
This chain set doesn't have many miles on it either, maybe 2000mi max.
I will check it at the crank also, but I'm probably going to use it.
Thanks again, Jeff
