Every head I have every owned{x,j,o,and the later square box no letter} Even the Edlebrock ones came with single springs with dampener. What is the dampener for? Does not look like it would have any strenth like a second spring would.
Also Eldebrock says the use Pioneer springs retainers and locks. Maybe that is why they wear out quick?

The dampeners are suppose to help dampen the harmonics in the srping and help keep it straighj at the higher RPM is what I was been told at one of the old Mopar drag racing seminars by the one and only Larry Shepard (SP?) right after he was hired by Mopar.

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)
