I have an 84 model 727 from a one ton with a 360. It is the short tail shaft. Is that a lock up model or not? I need to put something together for a 340 a body combo and he wants a 727. I have plenty of early BB cores to rob internals and a tail shaft.
Also. How do you ID a lock up besides the numbers on the case?

I think the LU has a machined smooth tip on the end of the input shaft as opposed to it being splined all the way out to the end.

That won't help. It's still hooked up the the motor. I thought there might be a wire in the case to make it lock up. Auto trans are not my in my area.

it would. if there is another electrical plugin terminal there other than the across the board 3 pin reverse lights/NSS ground plug in terminal that they all have then yes it is a LU.

Plenty of lockup 727 that do NOT have the electric unlock provision.

Pull the pan and see if the lock up plumbing in there or run the part number, only guaranteed way to tell.

Picture one Lock up plumbing (NOTE, NO ELECTRONICS)

Picture two - no extra connector, note input shaft

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

The 84 converter will not have a drain plug if it is a lock up as the verter from a non lock up will..

Thanks guys. Lots of good info and pictures here. There are no extra wires on either case I have so they are not electronic. I can pull the converter off of the 81 truck easily. I guess running numbers from the 84 is the best way to tell on that one. The motor is locked up on that one. My plans are if it is a lock up are to take all the internals out of an 68 BB core and put them in the small block case. I was told that would work. Thanks again.

The converter drain plug disappeared on January 10, 1977 and was never used again....lockup or not.
