How do I go about fixing this pinion leak. I noticed alot of oil under the car yesterday and I have a pinion seal leak. Is there anything I need to know before attempting to fix?

What rear and carrier do you have?

If it is an 8 3/4 with a 742 carrier you just zap the nut off with a air wrench and go for it. Then tighten with the air wrench. The torque is supposed to be something like 240 foot pounds.

If it is a 489 carrier then it has a crush sleeve and you should attempt to get the nut back exactly where it was or very slightly tighter. I would mark the nut before removing.

before you touch the nut, measure the pinion drag with an inch/pound torque wrench. then loosen the nut, replace the seal, reassemble, and tighten the nut to the same pinion drag. maybe a little more. never less.

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

Dana 60 use shims for all of the clearances and preloads, the best way to do it in my opinion. Zap the pinion nut off and tap the yoke out and then replace the seal, nothing to it Make sure and drain the gear oil out and clean the housing up real clean around the front where the seal goes in and tighten the heck out of the pinion nut, 240 FT Lbs+ I use a real thin layer of sealant type silicone on the seal before tapping it into the housing, unless the seal has a bead of teflon on it already Good luck Let us know the results

but when you have the yoke off check the yoke where the seal rides it. If it worn too much you need to get a sleave for the yoke or a new yoke.
