The cruise control in my 14 Ram has been working intermittently. A couple months ago the cruise light on the dash failed to turn on when the steering wheel button was pushed.(no cruise) Over the next few weeks, it started working and then not working again a few times.

The truck doesn't get driven every day. It's strange but if the truck is parked in the garage for a few days the cruise seems to work. If it's parked outside for a few days the cruise doesn't work.

My good friend is a service manager at a Ram dealer. He thought it was a faulty switch. He has replaced a few switches recently. I was scheduled to have the switch replaced tomorrow however, he called me tonight with some news. One of the trucks that got a new switch, still has an intermittent cruise problem. He wants me to wait a couple weeks before bringing my truck in. Hopefully they can figure out the issue with this other truck first.

Has anyone seen this problem before? My friend didn't see a similar case in the Chrysler computer system. He said this other truck had a code in the computer that was something like "P0579 speed control switch 1 performance." The replacement switch didn't fix it though.

All I can say is that you really need to troubleshoot it. My 2004 E250 was very intermittent and got worse. Ended up making a breakout box and immediately saw that it was a bad pressure switch on the master cylinder.

With that concern we replace the switch and the jumper harness in the steering wheel because the connection becomes poor and gives a false resistance reading.

Turn the key on and off 3 times, leaving it on, no start and look at the odometer readout for codes.

Check codes and have it scanned. You can check almost the complete system with the scanner. And it may have set a code also depending on what it is. Ron

Check the brake pedal activated off switch,if it is loose it will be intermittent.

The truck is out of warenty for "time" but not on "miles". Chrysler gives the dealerships leeway to fix things like this under warenty. My friend is going to push this through for me. It's weird that he's had this issue on three or four trucks recently.

I think they ordered a harness for the truck they have in the shop right now. I'll mention the brake pedal switch.

Does that key trick still work for reading codes? I thought that stopped years ago.

I don't know if this truck is the same as my E250, but the E250 uses both the brake switch and the master cylinder for signals to take out the cruise. The signals are opposite to make it more fail safe. Mine ended up being the switch in the master cylinder.

I replaced about $200 in parts (including wiring) before I made a breakout box to monitor all the signals while driving. I also made a bench setup to test the whole system - that is how I figured out how the system works.

I would hope that a 2014 would have much better diagnostics than my 2004 E250. I would expect that you should be able to monitor the state of the switches in the 2014.

I would be troubleshooting the issue before replacing any parts based on my experience.
