I need to replace a damaged down-leg booster in my 4150. I see that getting the old one out is easy. Installing the new one requires a $300 special tool.

Before I buy the tool, I thought it best to check with you guys: Is there a way to do the job without the special tool (homemade alternative tool)? Does anyone have a tool they could rent to me?

Thanks

Easiest solution: call a local(?) carb modifier and ask them how much to replace a damaged booster. Much cheaper than buying the tool, plus you'd still need to learn how to use it correctly. I saw pics of the results from someone who didn't figure out how to work it properly and he botched up the main body on his own carb.

I had a dead Holley body with downleg boosters. I thought I'd take out the boosters by using a hammer, not knowing that the bellmouth on the metering block side of the booster was formed during installation and that's what held the booster in place.

Result: Two messed-up boosters and a carb body that remained scrap.

Then I researched how to do it! but I still won't read the instructions first.

Scary stories. I think I'll try to find a local carb shop

Lol, had a 850 that could never get rich enuff, fought it and fought it. Pulled it completely apart cleaned every passageway. Found that one of the down leg boosters wasn't cast with the hole all the way thru! Knocked out the bad one and epoxied in the replacement. Using it still today.
