What month did Chrysler Corp. start painting the steel rims black instead of body color on the 1971 model year?

it probably varied by plant, but Hamtramck was leaving steel wheels black by the end of March

I think it went like this. With trim rings or dog dish caps, the wheel was body color, and with full wheel covers the wheels were black.

the '70 T/A Challenger was the first car (musclecar era) with hub caps & trim rings - the wheels are black, this became an OPTION for 1971

the body colored steel wheels with hub caps ended during the spring of 1971

Would you know which plant/plants didn't follow this??

Yesterday I saw a 71 Charger on FB that was said to have a 9/20 something build and was said to be built with Black wheels and dog dished?
Thanks Ron

they all would've followed it, the exact date the change was implemented may differ

IMO the only way for a non-black 9/20/70 car to have black wheels & hub caps was OPTION W12 & it included trim rings scope

My '71 Charger has a January build date and came with black wheels and full wheel covers. Don't know if that data point is helpful or not, but there it is.
