I think it went like this. With trim rings or dog dish caps, the wheel was body color, and with full wheel covers the wheels were black. the '70 T/A Challenger was the first car (musclecar era) with hub caps & trim rings - the wheels are black, this became an OPTION for 1971 the body colored steel wheels with hub caps ended during the spring of 1971

it probably varied by plant, but Hamtramck was leaving steel wheels black by the end of March Would you know which plant/plants didn't follow this?? Yesterday I saw a 71 Charger on FB that was said to have a 9/20 something build and was said to be built with Black wheels and dog dished? Thanks Ron

Thanks Ron they all would've followed it, the exact date the change was implemented may differ IMO the only way for a non-black 9/20/70 car to have black wheels & hub caps was OPTION W12 & it included trim rings
