My New wheel bearing on my 72 Dart with 7 1/4 rear has been getting too hot to touch, but not smoking hot after a 45m drive, drives fine, no noise, just gets a little hot, I'm thinking the guy at the shop may have pressed it down too far, because the retainer ring was a little lower then the old one by markings, but he sead maybe the new retainer ring was not as wide as old one, I did not look a that, so don't know if my old one was wider. I don't think it was on my end, took axle out & had a shop cut the retainer ring off & get the bearing off & press the new one on, but the press was in back, so did not see how he done it, got the old seal out, rubbed the new seal on one side with grease & put it in with a pipe that was same size & new gasket, put grease on outside of bearing, put axel in, light taped it 2 or 3 times with a rubber hammer, tighten the 4 nuts down doing it x patterns to 35fp, So I don't know what could of went wrong???

I'm using Valvoline High Performance 80W-90 Gear Oil, says for
conventional or limited slip!

They don't use gear oil.

Bearing is post to be pre greased as far as I know on inside, I greased all of out side with bearing grease, got it from rock auto, sead 9" or 10" brakes, mine is 10"., but I don't see how it could be for both, someone told me rear wheel bearings are not the same between 9" & 10",so that could be it too!... when I get another one, I'm going to go with a deff. brand, may go with a NOS one off ebay!

up on stands does the axle turn freely? How are you determining the temp?

Brakes make no difference to bearing.

Is bearing pressed on the correct direction?

Did you reset the adjustment for the bearings or just bolt the plate back on?

What did you set endplay to?

You have never replaced the bearing on a 7 1/4.

Yes, bearingsdo come pre-packed however I don't trust parts these days. I alway shoot grease into the bearings until it all oozes out. Just a precaution. Also, it could be a brake shoe hanging up. That will heat things up. Do you have a temp gun?

Your parts house will have or can order a $5 hypodermic needle that fits in the end of your grease gun

I was wondering what bearing was on my axel, Is this bearing for 9" or 10" brakes? My old bearing part # MRC RW6-11B

Not sure why you think they are different. Factory parts manual shows one part number for this.

Well, auto parts shows 9" & 10"brakes when looking up bearings & some auto parts shows 9" & 10" seals, the seal that come out of my rear, looking it up, says its for 9" brakes, I just wondering did someone change a seal or did someone take a /6 rear & put 10" brakes on it, if so, that could be my problem!

Pre '73 only has one bearing. '73 up has 2 different ones, determined by bolt circle/brake size. BBP axles have a bigger bearing than SBP axles, and they will not interchange. This is for A body.

What about seals, Got a new one from autozone for 72 Dart with 7 1/4, did not have brake size on it, its not as wide as my old one I took out, would it be ok to use?

The width of the seal is not going to have any effect on a wheel bearing getting hot, unless it has allowed all the gear lube to run through the wheel bearing and has washed the wheel bearing grease out.

If the seal goes into the housing first, it is suppose to keep the gear lube out of the bearing. Gear lube running through a grease packed wheel bearing will wash the grease out of the bearing, but it will leave a grease trail from the bearing/axle down inside the brake backing plate and all over the brake shoes.

The brake size does not have any effect on the wheel bearing or seal. That into is for the "guys" at the parts counter to ask, so they can sell you other stuff related to your brake size. If you had a grease/gear lube leak because of a failed bearing or seal, your brake shoes could have a coat of grease covering the shoes or the inside of the drum, that would make that wheel a lot hotter then the other side. Maybe you need to replace your brake shoes and clean up the drum.

If the axle & bearing turn smoothly, there are no leaks inside the drum, and the brake shoes are clean and dry, I see no reason for a hot axle end. What are you using to determine the bearing is hot, and how much hotter is it then the other side? Gene
