I just thought I would ask you guys for advice. I have a '70 dart with a 318 from a '71 challenger. I just recently bought a 1972 360 that came from a motorhome. I know I will have to change the cam and several other parts to get it running but I was just looking for some pointers on what I should reuse from the 318 or what I would be better off buying new. What cam would work best? I plan on reusing the stock heads and the cast crank if at all possible. They seem to be fine. I thought about having the block hot-dipped to start with a clean slate. I was told if it was hot dipped that I would have to change the cam bearings galley plugs and freeze plugs...which didn't seem like a bad deal. This is the first motor I have ever attempted to rebuild and I am trying with some help of some buddies and good advice from others, to maybe learn a few things. Thanks

Heads and crankshaft - no problem but would have the heads at least freshened and the crankshaft checked by a competent machine shop with a good shaft grinder.
By all means hot tank that engine. yes replace the core plugs, cam bearings etc. If you were to pop out one of the core plugs garanteed that you wouldn't believe what you would find in that block for sludge and crap. Also make sure to replace the valve springs with valve springs that are compatable with the cam you choose. Also make sure that if the exhaust valves have rotators on them to ditch them and get some regular retainers. Rotater looks as pictured.

No matter what you do, change all of the bearings and freeze plugs. If all of the internals are within spec, just reassemble with new wear parts. When you go to put it into the car, it's easiest to buy the B&M flexplate so you don't have to deal with torque converter weights. You may want to re-use your valve covers from the 318 if you have stockers and you want it to look more stock. You will also need a 360 car type oil pan, your 318 pan will not interchange.

thanks guys. If I buy a Mopar cam that is specifically designed for that motor, do I still need new springs??

Depends on the cam you choose. I would change the springs regardless.

I used to care but....... things have changed

Few more things to consider....

Motorhomes are notorious for not getting used, usually leaving the persone who buys a motorhome engines with a good, unused engine, requireing little or no machine work. In orther words, dont get too carried away, unless the engine has been sitting forever and is very rusty/dirty/nasty/worn inside. Tear it down to the short block and inspect.

Motorhomes also typically have low compression pistons in them.

Where are you in Illinoisey???

The mechanic I bought the motor from is a local guy that I trust. He said it was a running motor at the time it was pulled. He turned it over by hand with a breaker bar for me in the shop. The piston in it were dish top and I was planning on buying some flat tops. I think they might get me to 9:1 ? Around there. I am from central IL. Around Champaign-Urbana.
