I am getting ready to install my new headliner, but before I do, I need to insulate the roof.

I would like to use Dynomat Extreme on the roof, but is this going to be enough by itself?

or:

Glue on the Jute insulation padding right to the inside of a bare roof - Jute padding material that is sold by Year One?

or:

Dynomat Ultralite (lightweight thinner Version) first, then the Jute insulation on top of the Dynomat?

Any and all advice would be appreciated!

Thanks, Mark

I am by no means an experienced expert on which insulates the best but I would glue the dynamat to the roof first.

Isn't dynamat heavy? Chances it will come off of,the roof? The headliner bows pivot in place and something thick may prevent that from happening.

Blazin' Bob, your pm box is full.

Dynomat is very sticky, as I have used it on a steel roof of a '32 ford...you do not Glue Dynomat on.

Dynomat Ultalite is very lite, that is why I was asking if I should put that on first, then the Jute insulation.

Legendary Interiors told me to glue the Jute insulation directly to the steel roof with 3M contact Cement. I would think the Dynomat would hold up better to the heat from the roof, but I don't know.

What car, stock headliner going in there? Have you taken apart a headliner and see how it fits up tight to the roof? How thick is the mat?

The Dynomat lite is about 1/16" thick with a foil surface pointing down, and a special Buteral rubber that is very sticky. so, very thin.

Yes, I am going to put in the stock headliner. The headliner was removed by the previous owner, so I am not sure how tight it fits to the roof.

I watched the Legendary videos of insulating the roof with jute padding.

1968 Super Bee...with an Aluminum fuel cell in the trunk, and a A1000 fuel pump that is internal to the tank.

Oh, BTW, I did remove all of the undercoating from the car, weighed it, and it came in at almost 90 lbs!!!

I completely painted the underside of the car, so that added about 5-6 lbs of weight, and adding the Dynomat lite, is another 20 lbs...so, I am still ahead in terms of weight reduction.

Besides, I have a 605 Aluminum Hemi in the car, with dyno numbers at 975 HP at 6400 rpm. plenty of power for the street ;-))

Cool project! You obviously want it tight and solid. Go for it! Put the lite stuff up and the factory stuff. I think the bows will help hold everything up there as well.

It might be better to paint Lizard Skin on the roof. They have a liquid insulation you can spray it on or roll it on. Good for sound deadening too. This way no worries of it coming off and pushing down on your headliner.

Put the dynamat on first, then you can glue the jute to that if you want extra insulation.I did something similar in my car. Going on 8 years since and no problems

8 years is pretty good for holding up to the California heat...it seems that the Jute insulation comes unglued after a while, that is why I was asking about using the Dynamat Ultralite first, and Jute on top of that.

Thank you for all of the replys!

Use the Dynamat extreme with the hand roller for adhesion. I have done several cars this way and the results are worth it. Once the headliner is in its invisible. Just don't out it over the dome light brace. You will get a very noticeable decrease in noise and especially heat. Once its stuck on, its stuck on. Mine have lasted several Nevada summers and none have came loose. Dynamat extreme does not have a smell, unlike some of the other knockoffs.

Nice build BTW, that Hemi is impressive!

What should this have said? "put" it, or "omit" it? shruggy

I definitely want a decrease in noise and heat smile

Nv69, did you also use the jute over the dynamat?

I just talked with the tech at Legendary, and he told me that Dynomat on the roof is much better than Juts...he told me that they do a lot of cars this way, and to not use the jute.

He said the only negative thing about Dynamat is the cost.

This hint may be for others who are gluing to the roof. Unless you live in the Far North, anything glued to the roof should be glued with 3M Super 90 adhesive. That has the highest temperature release point. I found out years ago when the new cool headliner in my '64Dog came down one sunny day. Called 3M to complain, was told my upholsterer had used 80 instead of 90, they were right.

Have you tried test fitting your roof bows? Mine fit so tight there's no way insulation is going behind there.

No, not yet on trial fitting the bows...I just want to talk to a few of the people on this board first to make an educated decision.

After talking to Ron (tech) at Legendary, he told me to use the Dynamat Lite only on the roof. He did tell me that it works much better than jute.

Unless someone tells me differently, I am going with the Dyamat Lite only.

I still would like to hear back from NV96 on what I should do about the support brace for the dome light...

Thank you to all!

Mark

I used Dynamat Extreme from Amazon at about 1/2 price with free shipping. I also used the double sided foil covered jute after that. My E-Body is quieter inside than a Mercedes Benz now, but I cocooned the entire interior. It is so worth it. It sounds like you are sitting in a bank vault when you close the door.
