could the rockers of been set to tight? or the valve springs binding out??just weird they all rotated by hand crank then it eats itself, not just one cam lobe but almost all of them, seems like there might be something else going on.

That concerns me.......

I am going to check lifter location with the bad cam on a factory 360 block and then compare it to the Mopar block. Then the plan is to slip a brand new Bullet I have and see if it has the same offset.

I guess it pays to check.

I have done 5 drag weeks with roller cam small blocks with no failures. After the first drag week I did send the set back to be checked and they said they needed rebuilt and I had them do it. I never swapped them out again and had 3 drag weeks on a set of solid rollers when I pulled the 360 out in favor of a 416.

I ran comp 828-16s in the 360 with a cam that was 260ish@.050 and .650 lift. That combo loved to cruise over between 3500-4000RPM so I wasn't exactly easy on it. I also had to shift it at 7000 the last year to try and squeeze out all it had to qualify for my class. I normally tried to save that little bit for the last day lol.

I don't recall the cam specs in the 416 exactly but it is quite a bit larger than the cam in the 360 and it has way more spring. The lifters are an old MP part number but they are made by crane. We had intended to use the newer better comp roller to clear the R1 block but they were out of stock and we were out of time. It probably deserves new lifters before it does another drag week just to be safe. But at 1500-1800ish miles and 60 passes all seems well.

For what it is worth the comp 828-16s dropped right in my 360 with zero grinding, its a tight fit to drop them over that lump in the casting but they go right in. They didn't even come close to working in the R1 block the 416 has but I believe that is a well known problem.

I put 10k street miles on my old W2 headed 408 motor and 63 drag strip passes with a solid roller cam and never replaced or rebuilt the comp lifters. But did need to replace the bronze distributor drive gear several times and they are not cheap for a SB. Make sure you spend the money on good valve springs and rocker arms.

Man I must be buying the wrong 360 blocks because on the last two blocks I've used with Comp 829 roller lifters I have had lots of grinding to get them in. And I'm not talking polishing rolls, carbide burrs

Maybe it is because you are putting the big block 829 lifters in when you should be using the small block 828-16s. stirthepot grin The 828-16s are close but they fit.

I'm with John, the last 408 I built had 828-16 lifters in it, and I spent several hours clearancing the block so that they'd drop in.

Why aren't you guys using the Comp 8043 roller lifters? The link bar is on the inside.

Up till resently I always ran Racer Brown solid lift cams in my small blocks. When I did desire to step up to a bigger cam I posted a question about what lifter to run and was pointed to the Comp 828's. Heck I still have a solid lift cam in my R3 block but when I rebuild next Winter I hope I can bring away enough safely to get the Bam roller lifters in it so I can lean on this engine some. I know I will never buy the 828's again.

I used the 8043's in my R1 and the only thing that had to be done was remove most of the boss for the extra head bolts. No grinding on the galley walls.

We were going to run the 8043s in the R1 416 in my car now but they were out of stock at Comp and we were out of time. I do know for sure that the 828-16s will not work in the R1 block.
