I know what it typically costs to have a pair of aluminum heads CNC ported but what would you say a typical price would be be to have them hand ported by an experienced hand porter?

I paid close to $800 or a touch more for a set of
W-9 heads.. that was a stock port when I sent them
to Shady Dell.. I paid $750 for a set of CNC B1MC
heads( a group deal)

$600 and up. Depending on how much you are wanting done. A maximum effort deal could near $1200.

Larry Smith opened up my Trick Flows to MW size, opened up my 337 manifold to MW size (it was close already) and cleaned up the plenum and runners for $700 ish.
His work is really nice.

Or more. I copied this from the web page of a fairly well known head porter from the Midwest.

Hand head porting
• Small block applications $1400.
• Big block applications $1500.
• "Econo" porting $750, includes valve job, chamber finishing, throat sizing, short side reworked, openings squared.

The following is performed on all hand ported cylinder heads
• Disassemble and clean
• Fully Ported (All chambers, intake and exhaust ports)
• Custom Multi-angle Valve Job (Sunnen VGS)
• Valves refaced w/intake backcut (Sunnen VR7000)
• Surface mill to MLS finish (Winona CBN)
• Flow testing (SuperFlow 600 w/Black Box)
• All valve springs checked for pressure (Buxton digital)
• Assembled (Spring pressures/install height listed on invoice)
• Bagged for install

These prices seem kind of cheap, what kind of gains are you guys getting and how many hours are being put in for these prices?

For me, it's $65/hr.
Pretty easy to spend 17-22hrs porting a set of heads...... And some heads just take longer than others.

So I wonder if there may be a difference in opening them up to MW size and porting them to their potential?

I'm happy with the 360 CFM figure.
I suppose there is always room for a little more.
My junk is a street effort, I thought the price Larry charged for work he did was very reasonable.

The intake was just as smooth and shiny.

Your work is inexpensive at $65.00 an hour. That's nice work.

Thanks.
I'm aware that there are some pretty reasonably priced sources for CNC porting, so if you charge too much, you price yourself out of work.

For some things, if I don't think I can provide the customer with a finished product that is comparable in flow and price to what's available CNC'd, I'll often suggest they just have them done by the machine.
