I broke one after about 10 passes in a mid 11 sec combo. It was one of PTC's 9.5" $490 street/strip converters back in 2003 or so. Had my local converter guru cut it open to repair it and was told it was a poorly built converter. Fixed it, sold it, then bought a good one.

I ran one for years in a street/strip 340 dart. Upwards of 1000 passes on it and probably 5,000 miles on the street with no issue. I still have that converter actually. That Combo went mid 12's. We also have one in my dads 440 Challenger, high 11 second car with probably 500 runs on it.
I think like anything else you get what you pay for. If you're buying a $500 converter its safe to assume the internals are not on par with a $1200 converter. BUT not all combos make enough power to warrant the more expensive piece.
EDIT: TCI makes a "Street Fighter" converter, those we had terrible luck with.

Dustin...it's funny how this works! I'm not making an argument at all (we both know how this race car stuff goes), but I had good luck w/ a TCI Street fighter...and I still have it on the shelf, lol. Ran it for a few years running mid 11s N/A and made some 10 sec passes on nitrous with it. My converter guy didn't like it either, but it wasn't broken and had way more time on it than the PTC I replaced it with. Thought I was upgrading to the PTC when I changed combos, haha.

Definitely is luck of the draw sometimes it seems. The Street Fighter we got had over 25% slip behind a mild 440, it would never even try to lock up. I think we tried it for 3-4 runs and then got rid of it.
