interesting. you would think that it would be formulated to dry properly at the mixture it comes out of the can. i'll keep that in mind.
Yes I thought it was strange too, but it's been my experience. If you are going to use it full strength, I would just try to keep the coats thin and give them plenty of drying time. Way far back in this post, was someone said that the problem with rustoleum is that it never completely hardens, and I think 69charger replied and said it hardens if applied thin as with mineral spirits.
I did one fairly thick coat that was thinned with Penetrol of "regal red" and it can still be scratched with a fingernail, though it is harder to scratch that successive coats of rustoleum thinned with mineral spirits where there was not enough drying time between coats. Rustoleum tech line said it was put on too thick, and the top dried and is not letting the solvent out from beneath.

I looked at JeffS's post again last night which makes me wonder if the sanding schedule should be revised. If I understood what he said, he did the regular 2 coats - 600, 2 coats -1000, 2 coats - 1500, but then he used 600, did one more coat then went to 1500 in order to get rid of some shiny circly things.
It seems like if you go back to 600 later on, why bother doing anything but 600 on the earlier coats? like 2 coats, 600, 2 coats, 600, 2 coats, 600, 1 coat, 1500.
Does that make sense? I suppose you could use 1000 instead of 600 each time as well then, then 1 final coat and go to 1500?
Also does anyone have a picture of those shiny circly things JeffS mentioned?
i agree with you. there's no point in sanding down the previous-to-final coats with 1000 grit. in fact, it might be too smooth to give the next layer enough tooth. i think i'm going to stick to 300 to smooth things out on this first day's work and then use 600 from the out until final wetsand. the finer grits don't do any good until you get to colorsanding anyway as long as the final coats can cover the sanding marks from the previous layer you're good to go.

I read through this entire thread but skimmed some stuff (29 pages is a lot to read). I have one question that I never found an answer to.
How is this technique in regards to covering a darker color with a light one? My Jeep is currently a navy blue but I was considering going to a lighter color. Any adjustment in procedure/technique for this?

Exit1965 what I said to do is 2 coats sand with 600 do 2 more coats sand with 600 do 2 more coats sand with 600 and then one single coat and then sand with 2000. Also what I was saying is that 1000 and 1500 grit cut really fast and if you just do 6 coats without sanding with 600 and doing one more single coat it's easy to sand through to the next layer of paint and it will leave shiny rings in the paint because the layer under the top is shiny and they will not polish out. They kind of look like ghost images in the paint. If you sand with 600 and do one final single coat then sand with 2000 if you cut through the top layer of paint you will not get the rings in your paint because the layer under it was not shiny. I have to see if I have good picture of the rings.

Ahh I see, sorry I misunderstood. That does make sense and sounds a bit easier to boot.
I'm done doing testing, so the next time I break out the roller will be on the dart, and I think I'll start with the trunk lid for some extra practice before doing the rest of the car..

jeffs - i was wondering when someone would get to that point, i can tell your in the advanced stages of polishing, and wetsanding, the "rings" are a function of going thru the paint, to the next layer. so if you do 2 coats you'll not go thru it with 1500 if you wetsanded between coats because you don't have to remove too much paint by wetsanding. interesting, it took 29 pages in this post for someone to get to the real advanced stages of polishing, but your on the right track, i can tell your polishing is approaching show quality because i encountered the same issue years ago. if i really want to pull off show quality, i'd do 10 coats, and get it perfect.
