Ok guys, i put together a stroker engine for a friend, 496 cu in, 383 stroked,,440 source kit, and heads, went in a '66 plymouth, automatic car,,camshaft he had is now to small,,,what would you put in the engine, this is a driver, not a racer. want it to sound good and run good,,,engine is very docile now,,,

Some questions that need to be answered first; what is the torque converter stall now, or are you willing to have one built? What heads are on the motor? What is the compression ratio? Intake manifold and carb ? What is the rear gear ratio and weight of the car? Exhaust system discription? What type of cam do you want, hydraulic,solid, flat tappet or roller? Being a driver, what kind of highway speeds and distances is the car used for?

....and, exactly what do you want from the car.

I have a friend that has a 500 inch BBM and although performance was important, his priorities were low maintenance, easy on parts, and to sound bad azz. His Scott Brown cam gave him EXACTLY what he wanted. It is a low lift, soft ramp hydraulic FT, with 320° advertised duration. Probably giving up 50 hp in cam choice alone, but he could not be happier, and it is truly about the most bad azz sounding car I've ever been around.

Car sounded real tuff when it was the stock 383 engine, and ran good also, now that it has been stroked, it's very docile, and doesn't have the overall power it had before, I am thinking it need more cam, and carb, was just trying to figure out what camshaft I need to go to, to get the car back to sounding good and running good, this will be a weekend driver, not a race car,,,

You don't want to go too big on the cam with a 2800 stall and 3.23 gears... also that 650 carb will be way to small for 496 ci. Although it will have great throttle response.

I don't understand the "pick a cam for sound" mentality. The cam is to make the engine run with the desired power band, not to be a noisemaker! Play engine sounds through the car stereo instead. Believe it or not, some manufacturers actually do this

If you like the Lunati cams, it looks like the next one up would be a good choice for your combo. #10230704. 276/284 adv. 234/242 @ .050. .513/.533 lift. They recommend an 850 carb, which we already knew you needed. But they also recommend a 3.73 gear. You might get away with it with the stroker motor, though. Your compression, converter, and intake look good.

Big C.I. motors need bigger cams than the smaller C.I. motors with the same parts need
On your deal I would look at Comp Cams Extreme lift High Energy series and use either the XE285HL or maybe the bigger XE295HL grind for the nastier rumpty rump sound at idle
I have that grind in one of my mild 464 C.I. pump gas motors, I installed it four degrees advanced on the intake lobe and it sounds really impressive and ran real well in my old 3450 lbs. Duster
The XE285HL might be a better choice for your deal though, my Duster had a custom built ten inch converter and 4.10 gears with three inch exhaust to the rear bumper

If your stock 383 had more power than the 500 inch motor with the same cam, you need to looking for other problems first.

You sure about that compression....

If the stealth heads still have the as supplied springs, and you're looking to be able to reuse them, I'd suggest a Howard's Rattler 728081-09.
The mp 509 would also be a good choice, although recently I saw those priced in la-la land, so I'm not sure those are a cost effective option any longer(unless the price has come back down to something reasonable).

Edit: I just did a search...... This past summer the 509 cam kit was around $500+.
Looks like they have come back to their sanity....... Summit shows it for $299.

I had the above listed lunati .513/.533. It was in a 10-1 440 and was pretty mild. Great low speed and mid range. But it may be undersized in the duration department for an engine as large as your friends.

I would bet it is quicker than the 383 by a long shot.It certainly won't turn the same rpm as the 383 with the same cam and the 650 carb isn't helping it rpm either.

Also, the "Ede dual plane" could be either a std Performer, or Performer RPM.
The std Performer is too small for a 496, as is the carb.

RPM + 2" divided spacer if you have the room.
