Does anyone know if the bell on the 3.9 is the same as the 5.2 or 5.9? My buddys 1999 van needs a tranny and its a three speed. 727? Local shop told him 1400 to rebuild. I think thats a little nuts. I know overdrive trans are usually more but come on. A well known hot rod shop around us only charges 500 for a 727. So if it will swap ill give him a newer 727 I have laying around. Thanks

a 99 van should NOT have a 3-speed.

The column shows 1-2-D. I did a little research on the web and it says both 3 speed and 4 speed autos were available?

How hard would it be to change over to a 518? Just a driveshaft swap?

3.9 should have a 42RE. the computer will probably have a fit if it doesn't see the sensor inputs from the tranny....

I think you will find that it has a 42RE computer controlled 4spd OD tranny. They stopped making 727's and 904/999's in the late 80's.

All of the 3.9/5.2/5.9 magnum vehicles equipped with an automatic only have D 2 1 on the lever indicator. There is also a button on the end of the lever that will prevent the tranny from shifting into 4th, and indicator on the dash will say OD Off.

727's were available in vans until the mid 90's I don't remember the exact cutoff. it would be relabled a 37RH.
