The factory parts catalog is the guide.
No need to disassemble the VB, the punched number is visible with the VB assembled. The use of punched ID numbers didn't start until around '71 so there's no accurate way to tell what an earlier VB is correct for since the same castings were used for all installations in any given year.
A close look at the parts catalog shows very few different parts in the VB and, when there are differences, there are no part numbers on the individual parts so the only way to ID them is comparison of known parts.
