yeah-what azmopardart said-thermos are fantastic when they are tight & right-its tough to get a worn one back to specs-i enjoyed the thermo experience on my 340 dusters-[a little above and beyond a holly]-good luck on your refurbishment without professinal assistance

That could make sence. I don't bother with the later tq's (the smoggers) because they typically don't have the timed port for vacuum adv, and they tend to be lean (as you mentioned). So the next time I see one, I'll look at the top casting to see if those passages affect the other circuits. Thanks for your input.
My experience, running a late model tq, on a single plane intk, and with a low vacuum cam at idle, will be a real challenge to tune in. Run a lot of initial timing (means the total will have to be limited so that mech adv does not go beyond 35 to 38 degs), and get the earlier tq, if you can (side fuel inlet, with vac adv port, no holes/front pad in the top casting). Then open up the idle feed restrictions 0.002" at a time until the idle mixture screws work. Also, make sure at idle the boosters are not dripping fuel. No more overheating or burning eyes.
An earlier tq running todays unleaded fuel, will idle too lean.

Lots of good info here. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is adjusting the metering rods. The most recent kits I have bought omitted this step in the instructions. Over in the Tech Archives is an old thread that covers this and has some other info as well. Archive . I've used TQ's for years, my current one is the best of my efforts. No bogs, no burning eyes, good idle, easy starting. If you can get over your fears, the TQ is actually pretty easy to work on. Good luck.

One more thing, what were the throttle plate sizes on the CS series 1000 CFM TQs'????
I used to care but....... things have changed

The TQ's AFAIK with miss matched rods story came from me. I bought a reman from Holley or another rebuilder at Autozone. I pulled the rods and found the discrepancy. I have bought 3 and they all had sloppy shafts. I have enough knowledge and parts to never buy a reman again.

The Competition Series, 850 cfm and the 1,000 cfm all had 1.5" primaries and 2.25" 2ndaries. The 1,000 cfm had just the inner ring of the primary booster and the primary bore in the main body was a straight 1.5" bore fro m top to bottom.
Here is a pic of an actual 1,000 cfm CS model:

Yeah; we've both been "screamed at" by a certain guy over at the /6 site about remans, huh, Rug???
On TQ's I don't dislike them; I've had a couple that I had great luck with; but my biggest beef with them is that putting them on a non stock app, (mainly non OEM intake) is that the integral choke ones are so hard to find (I think they make that version out of that stuff they call unobtanium) Like I want to use one on a Mag motor with a carb'd intake; can't use the divorced choke on an Air Gap type intake!! (I don't believe I can on the M1 dual plane intake either)
I'd MUCH rather have a TQ than anything that says "Holley" on it!!!!! but my luck has more AFBs coming my way than early-mid 70s TQ's. so I use what I get. Whoever throws away AFBs; when Rug gets his fill I'll send you my address to send them to! (I just traded 2 Holleys for an AFB just to get rid of em!!)

And don't forget, there are about a dozen adjustments.Make them in order. If you skip one or do it out of sequence it screws up the other ones.
Don't think there is a dozen adjustments to be made externally, more like 6. But there are at least 2 adjustments per circuit that can be done externally to allow for fine-tuning and this eliminates the need for extra tuning parts when the jetting is right and the application of the carb is right for the engine.
A T.Q. is by far the easiest to take apart, to clean and to rebuild; what throws most people off is the adjustments to be made for the choke. Most rebuild kits instructions are somewhat vague on the steps for adjusting the choke. But that is the beauty of that part of the T.Q.
And when I build a Street/Strip carb or a Full Race carb, I remove all choke-related linkages/parts and the carb is absoultely the mechanically simplest 4bbl carb there is! And it will hold its own with much more expensive custom built carbs period.

My factory TQ manual (yes they exist) says to back out the set screw holding the metering rods ALL THE WAY until it bottoms out, then go 1-1/2 turns back up to start. Make sure the secondary air door does not hang open too far, on my 440 back in '82-'83 I put an extra 1-1/2 turns on the tension spring that holds the door closed. I believe that one is 2-1/2 turns from hanging straight open. Just to experiment, I opened the secondary air well bleeds up (tiny tubes under the plates near metering rod hole)to .040 and when I hit the 4barrel, the fender hopped up about 2 inches. Air rises up the tubes and brings a quick shot of fuel instantly. I don't recommend it, just saying it worked. On my '79-360 maxivan, as the gas got worse, I moved primary jets up from .095 to .098, then to .098 with 1997 metering rods! Thats WAY more fuel than my 440 needed with headers! If you are using pump fuel, you will have to keep at it. With the engine running, you can lift up on the metering rods and see if the engine dies or speeds up for rich/lean. Find older rods from the carter "tuning kit" instead of changing to bigger jets if you can. The ones I have are so small they look like needles at the end step...I have had .137" sec. jets(!)on the 440 which were FINALLY too rich.
P.S. this may sound absurd, but my '87-360 now has the stock ROCHESTER Q-JUNK and I had to put it back on after trying 4 different TQ's....I still say "CRAPGAS". Sad and painful, but true. The '71 is a mean mutha if you got one. Put mine on a buddy's '86 IROC-Z and almost blew it up!
