I was having a discussion with a person on Facebook about lift off hoods. He kept referring to all 69 1/2 lift off hoods as 6pack hoods. Claiming that 6 pack referred to both Plymouth and Dodge. My response was, and is, the original designation from Chrysler was simply Fiberglass lift off hood, for both models. The 6pack and 6BBL came later. I believe I have a copy of an original bulletin that goes over the options for the A-12 cars. 440 engine, 3 2-bbl carbs, 4.10 dana and fiberglass lift off hood. plus 15 inch wheels etc... Anyone have thoughts on this? Thanks for your help!

It was referred to as "fiberglass hood with air scoop" in the original information and much later referred to as a Lift-Off-Hood" but not by Chrysler. Just as the fresh air induction system in '69 was named the "Air Grabber" by Plymouth (Road Runner and GTX) and kind of nicknamed on the Road Runner "Coyote Duster", the Dodge models had the same under hood system but named the "Ramcharger" fresh air system. The "fiberglass hood secured with competition style hood pins" (Chrysler's ad statements) was just called that "a fiberglass hood with air scoop secured with competition style racing hood pins". It was and still is IMO easier to say or call it a "SIX PACK" hood or the Dodge term for 3x2 carburetors. The fiberglass hoods were different in style to each other but similar in style to the original Belvedere or Coronet STEEL hoods without the Road Runner/GTX or Super Bee/RT steel scoops. Calling it a Six Pack fiberglass hood is the easiest thing as a lot of Mopar and non-Mopar people usually know of what you're talking about. Even I call it that on my A12 Road Runner unless I'm sure to whom I'm talking with knows the difference between the Plymouth and Dodge terms. MikeR Here's a Plymouth ad and "fiberglass hood with Super Stock air Scoop"

Thanks guys, still so much confusion going on. So Dan are you saying that the Dodge version was released as the 6-pack hood right out of the gate? I had thought that those monikers came later from the marketing guys?

I don't think their was an official name or description that anyone adopted back then? Back in the day, especially after the T/A and AAR's came out, whether a Dodge or a Plymouth, whether an 440-6 or a 340-6, I agree we called them all Six Packs. To differentiate the 1969 hood, however, I always called mine a fiberglass lift off hood because there were a lot of other six pack cars out in 1970-71. They were sixpacks and had hoods (most with air grabbers) but they weren't removable fiberglass hoods. You just did not see A12's on the street...it was more unusual to see an A12 than a Hemi. Not too many guys were familiar with the A12's and the fact that they came with a factory removable fiberglass hoods so most people would not understand what a Sixpack hood meant without a more literal description. I got mine in Feb 1972 and I always referred to it as a fiberglass lift off hood on my "Sixpack" Road Runner. But that was me, I don't really remember what other guys called theirs and only knew one or two other guys with an A12 until I started showing mine at Mopar shows in 1983. Even then, you didn't see any at the shows to speak of until they started coming out of the wood work in the 90's.

Same wording, but a step further...
Leaves no doubt...
No shortage of A-12's here...
Some still in the hands of the original owners...
And you can still see 'em, OEM, here at Stanton in Sept... Loved the opening line at the bottom to Ford's commercial with "Beep Beep your @$$". Ford did it in a cartoon commercial (think it was a Torino ad?) without actually saying the A word. The Ford (and Chevy) guys on the street used it a lot out of spite.......especially after they got it handed to them repeatedly by a Road Runner MikeR

It framed a color drawing of the running bird with a bunch of loaded dynamite in his mouth. No Chevy or Ford guys ever commented on it. My car ran 11.20's and was street driven. The frame's about 44 years old now! Don't know why I kept it...good memories I guess.
