My 340 has been setting for about the last 6 weeks while I was swapping out the valve springs and push rods. Over the weekend I wanted to start it up but I had some issues with the cranking speed. When I first turned it over, it cranking over about half the normal speed (mini starter). After trying a few times, I decided to pull the battery and charge it inside due to the cold. Then after it was fully charged, I tried starting it again and I had the same results. It turned over about half speed and after 6 tries or so, I decided that the battery must be weak and I needed to have it checked. So I charged it back up to 100% and took it into NAPA and they tested it and it showed 990ca. They said it was in great shape.
So now I am guessing that I have a connection issue (no corrosion showing on the battery terminals) or my 10+ year old mini starter has gone out.

What do you think?
Can a parts store test my starter if I pull it out?

Thanks

Off the cuff and just curious is there any way there is something tight in the valve train after working on it?
Only reason I ask is I had a GM guy that lived next to me years ago who adjusted the valves bad wrong and all but locked the motor up.
This dumbass ran the stud in the rocker down all the way and backed them off a turn and a half... shock
Could be as simple as a starter...I did have a cable a couple years back on mine that was corroded in the center about 6" from the battery.
I'd never seen that before... shruggy

I have a hydraulic and I only turned the adjusters in 3/4 turn after zero. I turned the crank by socket without the plugs several times looking for push rod clearance issues once I had all of them set.
So I hope that is all good.

I may pull the starter this weekend and have it checked.
Thanks!

Alright, batt is good & eng not tight & the starter would be my last thought (it could be but was OK before). I would clean all the large cable ends/terminals including the ground path BUT you might toss in a known good batt from one of your other Mopars (I know they checked it but I always start with the battery & I dont they load test em like a starter draws em down). holler what it ends up being

You didn't unhook the large ground and then not reattach it did you? shruggy

I will recheck the connections when I pull the starter. The cables did not show any signs of corrosion and I did have the large ground cable hooked up.
I will check these things out plus have the starter tested this weekend.

Thanks!!

Try using a single jumper cable from the negative post to the trans case to piggyback the ground cable. This will double check your ground connection.I agree with RR on the battery swap, before you take too much apart!

I have a 650/810 RV battery for my camper that I could try. It is also in the basement with a full charge. It has two posts and two studs that might work for my connections for a test. Would cranking over the 340 hurt the RV battery?
Thanks

I ain't sure what the difference in the two types but I wouldn't think there'd be an issue.

This was my first thought as well. Have seen many times guys left this off when working on something and had that very problem. Give it a check.

Check all your connections at the starter relay on the firewall.
Mine were corroded, I put new ends on them & the problem went away.

Found it!
The positive battery cable clamp had cracked through on the bottom side and it had some corrosion too. I still checked all of my other connections too. After replacing the cable, it cranked over good and fired up after 4-5 tries of getting the E10 through the carb.

Thanks!!
