I ordered an Alto Red Eagle performance rebuild kit with the performance clutches and steels. The seal kit in the box is actually labeled as being from Transstar, and the clutches were loose (unlabled) in the bottom of the box.
There are 4 "red" smooth forward clutches and 4 "black" waffle direct clutches. Does this sound correct or did I get ripped off?

The direct clutches should be red and smooth as well if they are the Alto Red Eagle clutches.

Waffle clutches have to be used in the forward most clutch pack. They are waffled to allow the oil to escape quickly during a shift. The rear clutch pack is used released in reverse and you don't care how fast that is.

what he said .

Did you get ripped off , I doubt it , your supplier probably gets the bulk of his pieces from transtar and the eagles elsewhere. I don't think transtar carries the red clutches , I have yet to see them .

Different vendors put together different kits with parts from various sources. The words "performance", "heavy duty", "race" etc can mean different things at different suppliers.

The direct clutches typically referred to on this site I would describe as the Alto Red Eagle racing clutches. I believe Alto also makes other lines such as "performance" and "heavy duty".

I like the metallic green Raybestous waffle clutches. It have been a long LONG time since I have bought them ...... at that time I got maybe 300. Still have some left .. but I hear that they don't make them anymore.

FWIW,this is a pic of the Alto red clutches before I put them in my current trans. They have over 500 passes and looked fine this past winter during an inspection. The thickness was still good and they went back in for 2009.
