My crank broke in my work van/hauling unit last Tuesday and I have been looking for a replacement.I have found a clean 1996 extended cab V10 with 129K miles. Are these good engines? What fuel milage will this truck get.My main use will be hauling cars.I have no experience the V10s and appreciate any imput as I need to buy something soon. Thanks

Gas hogs and at that mileage some/most of the exhaust head bolts will be near breakage or broke already. Other problems as well, with the v10,s. Unless its a Great deal, steer away, far away.

I've got a 99 Ram 2500 2wd with a V-10, my only real complaint is gas mileage.
About 8 mpg pulling a 28 foot trailer. twocents

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

IIRC, '96 was the first year for sequential port injection? And a slight hp bump, 315 hp?

I've heard as high as 16 and 17 back in the day, for easy unloaded highway mileage w/ 2wd, 3/4 ton and 3.54 gears. Most of the reports I got were 11 ~ 12 MPG, loaded or unloaded.

Ordered a 96 V10 CLUB CAB automatic new in 1995 and loved it, towed all over the country and got 6-8 MPG with a 29' trailer, 11-13 with an open trailer. Lunched the Dana 60 w/4.10's at 85K miles, not too much later they went with American Axle rears. There are issues with the heads and head gaskets but they are generally good engines. I had an 01 V10 5-speed and it was worse towing than the auto. shruggy

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

I still have my 96 club cab V10 2500. It has about 165,000 on it now and is still 90% all original. I have no complaints at all with mine. Only changed fluids, front / rear brakes, front axle u joints etc. I would buy another one in a second.
