I'm looking to switch my 70 Coronet 318 4 speed to a 833 overdrive transmission from a 86 dodge truck. I need to get a bellhousing that will fit. Will the bellhousing from a 1989 dodge pickup with a v6 bolt up to the 1970 318 motor.

Yes...I believe an 89-91 v6 4 speed bell is what your looking for. It will bolt to any LA small block. As I just discovered...you will need an 11" 143 tooth flywheel to make it work. And that bell uses a hydraulic clutch.

Don't concern yourself too much with the oversize bearing retainer.
If you have a bellhousing that takes the larger of the two "normal" bearing retainers you can pop the retainer off and have it turned down to fit.

It's about the easiest operation you can do on a lathe and takes just a couple minutes to do.

If nothing else, you can sent it to me and I'll turn it to size. It would take longer to put it in a shipping box than to turn it down.

If the four speed in the car now has the 308 bearing with the 4.805 diameter retainer you can just swap it with the one on the OD trans and bolt it in.
Brewers sells new retainers also.

I thought most small block non OD bells were the smaller 4.354 retainer though, so your best bet may be to find an A/F body or truck bell for the 130 tooth flywheel that the OD trans with 5.125 retainer will bolt right onto. May have to change the fork and pivot for a B body though.

Is it possible to turn down the OD retainer to fit a 4.35 bearing hole when the trans has a 308 front bearing ?? I know it's possible to take the 5.125 retainer down to 4.80 , but to 4.35 ???

running up my post count some more .

The bellhousing will bolt up but what are you going to do about the Hyd clutch setup ?

Probably be into the bolt holes or close to it.

Diplomat440 is right, you'll be into the bolt holes, won't work. Maybe a small block scattershield would take the big bearing retainer (308 bearing, not OD)? shruggy
jess

Yeah, it's hopped up to over 160...

I didn't know the 1989 truck v6 bell was hyd. I found one in a junkyard and before I pulled it I wanted to see if it would work with my OD833 and what else I should take off the truck to use.

JohnRR, What would I need to switch to a Hyd clutch setup?

Master cylinder adapted to the clutch pedal under the dash and a line to the slave cylinder on the passenger side of the bellhousing.

Yep... wink But that's ok...my fault for not checking before I bolting the trans in the truck! I found out when starter didn't engage the flywheel.Ive got a new flywheel on the way..should be here tomorrow. You gave me a great deal on it...and it will work for me, just need a 143 tooth flywheel to match. I guess the later magnums use a 143 tooth as well.

I have a d100 v6 hydro bell that had the 833OD 4 speed ( it was also used in DAKS with a a535 5 speed (bolt in replacement for 883OD units)

it also has the 435 granny tranny bolt pattern

if the one you saw in the JY is duel bolt pattern you need to score it as it is a hens tooth. should be able to sell/trade it for what you want.

would not be that hard to make up a hydro MC and use the stock slave cyl for a hydro clutch in a car.

I bought a flywheel for a 78 318 at auto zone cheap, also flywheel for a 94 ram 1500 cheap,

order a 318 fly for a 85 d150 that's a 143 tooth for a 10.5 or 11.5 disc

Do you have a part number for this bellhousing?
