hey gang..
Looking for some close up detailed pictures of survivor, or correctly restored, 440's, in particular 1970. One question I have is the 4 water pump housing attach bolts. Do all 4 have a washer or only the one behind the heater hose nipple on the passenger side. I need to get a proper thermostat housing, 2780970 ( anyone have good one? ). I believe the heater hose nipples were installed and the tips where the hose goes masked off prior to painting? I believe I should also have the insulation packed under the intake manifold?

I still need to get the water pump installed obviously before I paint it.

Here's a HotRod article that highlights some of the details on a 440 engine restored by Frank Badalson. He did two magazine articles, one with a 440-4 engine and another with a 440-6.

http://www.hotrod.com/articles/mopar-engine-detailing-2/

There's also a little more information in the Moparts thread below.

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/1641675/1/70-440-6-engine-detail.html

As far as the heater hose nipples, they were installed after the engines were painted, so they do not have any paint on them.

Also, I've seen 2 different survivor 1970 6-Pack cars, and neither had the intake insulation installed. However, this may not be enough data points to say for sure that it was not installed on any 6-Pack engine.

I’ve also wondered about your washer question on the water pump housing, so I’m curious what everyone thinks.

Hope this helps.

The nipples are after paint.

The insulation and the plate that goes with it are for 350HP 440s that go in C bodies

Does anyone have details on the location of the washers used to hold the water pump housing to the block?

I have a detailed section about these washers in Keven Shaw and my book by car tech. How to restore 66 - 70 Mopar B-bodies.

I disassembled an original untouched 383 from an original low mileage car. Not saying all of the engines were exactly the same but I have found that all the water pump bolts have washers except for the one behind the heater hose nipple.

Found the same thing on the 440 I built in a 71 GTX and also in a 1970 Hemi I am currently building.

In a washer pump housing bolt kit I just bought from Frank Badalson it included 5 bolts and 4 washers.

On all the '70 440's I have or have had there is only one bolt that gets a washer.....the one behind the water pump nipple.
The only other bolt that has a washer is if the engine has power steering. On the lower power steering bracket that bolt is painted when the engine gets painted, gets removed and is then used for the power steering bracket.
Attached is a pic from my survivor Bird.

Having said that - I'm sure there have been some variances on years, engine sizes etc.

Where is the Orange paint supporting that statement?? Never saw that in my life but I haven't taken more than a handful of Survivor
types apart.

It looks like the bolt used when the engine was painted was removed, then replaced with a new bolt when the power steering pump assembly was installed?

I think it's interesting we have 2 different washer configurations stated for a 70 440:

1) One washer on only 1 bolt in front of the heater hose nipple.
2) All bolts have washers except the bolt in front of the heater hose nipple.

Does anyone else have survivor pictures to help provide more evidence for which scenario is correct?
