I have a 76 Van I'm parting out.
Its loaded and leaving for the crusher this morning.
I took the rear end cover off last night to pull the pin to save the 11" backing plates and drums as a set.
It has a sure grip(?) posi in it and a 3.55 gear. I spun the threaded insert on the pass side back but the drivers side wont spin back.
Even though the center is loosened up and the yoke removed it won't come out? Any ideas...?
Are the gears and posi worth saving? Haven't heard of anyone looking for them... shruggy

I would take the whole rear end out the dana 60 is a superior rear it is easy to change over to a car and easy to narrow if needed Dana calls there setup a sure lock and a 3.55 is one of the better gear ratios for the street .

You need a case spreader to pull the center section out.

You say 9 1/4 so I would try to back that bearing adjuster off so the carrier will clear to come out. I'm assuming you loosened the bearing caps to help spin that adjuster out?

I just did the 9-1/4 in my Ram. The adjusters thread into the axle tubes. There's not much room to work with, but I got them loose enough to get the carrier out by tapping them with a small center punch. The special adjuster tool makes it a ton easier though.

The tag on it said 3.21...The posi had a bunch of deep cuts in it from a bad pinion bearing maybe in the original 3.21's.
The gears were 3.55 that were in it. After really looking at it in the daylight the gears were sharp and in pretty bad shape. I saved the yoke and the backing plates and drums and junked the rest... bawling
I never would have used it and wasn't comfortable to re-sell it...Thx...

Apparently so did others, judging by the "case spreader" comment above. You turn the adjusters back and the case rolls out.

As to 9 1/4's in general - once I repaired them the first time for the typical pinion bearing/seal issue, I've never had to touch them again. And I certainly never throw out a 9 1/4 sure grip, or whatever we are calling them this week. twocents
