I put a 426 crate hemi from chrysler in my 70 cuda. We got if running last weekend but the valves were noisey. I followed the instructions and adjusted the valves by turning the engine 180 and adjusting various valves to zero than adding a turn and a half.Well they were still making noise so I pulled the covers and gave them all another 1/4 turn. Still noisey , so I again pulled the covers and gave them another 1/4 turn,I still have a couple noisey ones. I have all the valves down 2 turns , should I turn them down some more? Anybody ever adjusted a hemi running? I am getting tired of taking the covers on and off so any advice will be appreciated. By the way ,the car sounds great and has super throttle response, I just hope its not eating the cam. Thanks , Charlie.

First off are you sure it is not Header/ exhaust leak?
Anyway, there are two methods to set lifters. One that you described, turning the engine and setting the desigated valves and another method that goes something like
Set the intake lash when the exhust valve is opening and the exhaust when the intake is closing. Repeat for each cylinder.
Hydralic preload should be 1-1 1/2 turns after inital contact with the lifter. Turn the pushrod with you fingers and when it contacts the lifter and gets tension, that is where the turns start.

Are these hydraulic or solid lifters? Your post didnt say.

But it seems like you are adjusting them like a chevy engine would need adjustment.

I used to care but....... things have changed

You may have a couple of bad lifters. I would put it back on #1 TDC & adj to 1&1/2 turns down if that is the correct setting, turn crank 1/4 turn & adj the next one in the firing order & so on. then the valves will be adjusted correct & if it is still excessively noisy then you can search elsewhere for the problem.(& I think it is elsewhere as in a bad lifter(s))

Should only be 1/2 turn from zero lash. Might have a couple of bum lifters. No chance the cam is failing because this will make them tick. Might not be a bad idea to pull the intake and lifters and check the bottoms. I don't think you can pull them from the head.

Yes they are hydraulics , sorry about that.I will start from scratch and put the motor on TDC and adjust them the way the service manual says, intake 2&7, exhaust 4&8,turn 180 int. 1&8 ex.3&6 turn 180 int.3&4 ex 5&7 turn 180 int 5&6 ex.1&2.It also states to turn the adjuster 1&1/2 turns. I think it might be a good idea to pull the intake manifold so that I can see the lifter preload.I have not read anything about bad lifters but if there is a common complaint about them this would be the time to change them. This is a brand new motor (World block)that Stanton engines assembles and according to the paper work has been pre run and timing set to 32 degrees. The lifters made noise as soon as the motor started and after 3 adjustments most got quiet except for a couple of them on each side(hard to tell which ones). The motor has about 30 minutes run time and zero miles. I put 6 quarts Chevron Delo 400 15w40 in and 1 bottle of Comp Cams additive, which Mopar recommends in the paper work that comes with the motor. It has plenty of oil pressure as it pegs the 80 pound gauge even when warm.I wont be able to work on it till later in the week so I will keep you posted on progress. If I have to change the lifters does anyone have any suggestions? I tried doing a search for stanton engines but had no success, thought maybe they would have some suggestions.

i agree. modern lifters are supposed to be 1/2 turn, not 1 1/2. check the docs for comp cams or something, or if you know the manufacturer of the lifters. there are only a few companies making lifters these days that are bought by most cam companies, so it should all be the same.

The motor should be under warranty... I personally wouldn't touch it until I have spoke to MP or Stanton's.

Either should be able to help you out!

Stanton Racing Engines - 859-885-7354. They are in Kentucky

Thanks for the phone number , I will call them tomorrow when I get home from work. The motor has a 90 day warranty from date of purchase.I bought the motor on 11/04/08 about 96 days ago, story of my life. I will try the 800 number mopar has in the instruction manual that comes with the motor, maybe they have some suggestions. Thanks,Charlie.

It did not have a tag just a sheet of paper that seems to be a dealer order sheet which has a ship date to the dealer of 9/03/08 along with a OMC/contract number.

The pad on the top of the motor has the numbers 26119 stamped in it, any ideas on this.Do you think the builder serial numbered the motors? I called the Mopar Performance hot line and spoke to a tech, he took all the info and said he would call back after he spoke with some of the other techs. That was on wednesday, still no phone call.I will try again on monday.
