Other than the location of the vent bolt, and the shape of the back cover(for lack of a better word), is there any other difference in a truck 8 3/4 housing vs a car housing? Any center section should bolt up correct?(741, 742, 489)

I've got a truck housing I'm going to use in my Dart. I tried installing a spare center section I have and the ring gear doesn't fit in the opening very easily. I had to turn the center section 90 degrees to get the ring gear through the opening...then turned it back to the correct orientation. Then it slipped over the studs fine. Do I just need to do a little grinding on the housing opening to clear the ring gear?

I guess I should have asked this question a little earlier. I just got a call from the guy who shortened the housing for me. He's got it done. I hope I won't run into a problem using it.

The major difference is that the springs mount above the housing on the truck and below the housing on the car...but you did know that didn't you? blush

I don't mean to be a jerk but after you clean the perches off they all look pretty much the same.

The back of the housing looks like this.

I guess it's a 57-64 housing? Maybe it wasn't out of a truck since the perches weren't on the top side. My concern was that the ring gear doesn't fit through the opening.

I helped a friend pull a rear end out of a nasty, rusty '56 Plymouth in a You-Pull-It yard in Everett a few years back for his new project '56. I put together the rear end after cleaning it up with new bearings, seals and brakes. It accepted a 8.75" third member and should bolt into his '56. I think the housing was actually for the Mopar drop out that preceded the 8.75". I don't claim to be an expert on that stuff as most of my experience is with the Dana 60s.

Some of the early rear ends that accept a drop-out third member were actually 8 1/4", not 8 3/4". Count the fasteners that hold the third member, the 8 3/4" has 10 and the 8 1/4" has 11.

Just got the housing back. It's got 10 studs not 11. Not sure exactly why the ring gear didn't fit through the opening. I'll clearance the opening so it fits. Thanks guys!

Does your housing have a drain plug near 5 or 7 o'clock position? not right at the bottom.

No drain plug but I thought about adding one. It would make gear swaps less messy.

A long bar was installed through the housing so the ends could be squared up. As long as the outer bearing diameter is the same as other 8 3/4's it should work.

I took a grinder to the housing opening. The center section slides in and out of the housing easily now. Now to order axles and brakes from Dr Diff.
