Is there a better way than the Mopar Performance ignition System.
I am tired of ECU boxes and Ballast resistors. Now it seems I have a pick up promblem.

I switched away from the stock type ECU to the MSD Street Fire box back in 2012. This box is a little bit larger than the ECU and it has a rev limiter.
At that time, it was stock on Oreilly's shelf.

I prefer the MSD over the orange ECU. It's been my experience that the orange boxes pop, sometimes just sitting over a period of time. They are real sensitive to grounding issues. When I run the orange box I always run a separate ground wire.

I'm also running the MSD Street-Fire box but using it with an MSD distributor and coil...No ballast resistor...

Dude! You won't be sorry for getting a complete MSD system. They install and work excellent! They aren't the cheapest for a reason.

I've run the same 6AL box and Blaster 2 coil in my Road Runner since 2005 without any issues. I ran the pro billet distributor up until about 5 years ago. I switched to an FBO unit for the vacuum advance (it's a street car).

The car was my Dad's and we were always messing with ECU's and ballast resistors for the first number of years he owned it. That stuff is junk. I'd never switch back.

Another vote for MSD. I have run a 6 AL box and Blaster coil for >12 years w/o issue.

The OE ignition system was fine... but with quality of available parts sounds like a PITA to take care of these days.

While you're at it, take a look at the ready to run distributors. I don't know about the other brands but I had a MSD ready to run distributor in my old bracket car for over 12 years and it's still running. Car shifted at 6500 RPM's with no issues ever. Very clean and easy to install. No ballast resistor, no box and usually about $50 less than a distributor & box setup.

There are guys using generic HEI modules. One could even be hidden in an Orange box. I have also seen them mounted to the distributor. I need to go find the write-up for the wiring, but it works with the factory pickup in the electronic distributor.

I vote for the HEI. you can mount it under the dist on an alum plate (use some radio shack heat sink paste) & someone makes a tailor made plate for this but it is pricey & it is easy to make yourself. An OE black 4 terminal one out of a '75 or later chebby is a good bet or an aftermarket one. best is to use a full 12V E coil with it and B terminal goes to ign1/ign2 (blue and brown wires connected together at ballast or earlier) and C terminal goes to coil negative and W and G go to the dist pickup. orange goes to W and purple goes to G. EDIT www.designed2drive.com for the adapter plate, $25 to your door. make it yourself.
