Hi all,

I went to replace my leaking Accelerator pump diaphram, took off the Holley 4 barrel 4160 (3310-8) and it has 2 base gaskets?

1 base gasket is the square one, and the other is the base gasket that outlines the 4 barrel holes, but the inside was blown out, or ripped out.

Why is this, I always thought there was just 1 base gasket? I bought the holley rebuild kit and it comes with both gaskets..

replace with just 1 gasket that outlines the 4 barrels? Or use the square one?

The one I have always used on my 70 383 is like this one. It is thick with compression limiters at each bolt hole:

The 1970 cars had a thick gasket as outlined above. The choke thermostat rod, will not be the right length with a thin gasket.

All,

I wanted to circle back on this thread and let you know that I fixed my issue once and for all...

When we replaced the accelerator pump, the original carb had 2 thinner 4 barrel gaskets. The inside plus sign was worn away, or eaten away. I replaced the carb gaskets with the
Holley 108-18. When I put this on, we noticed immediately this strange whistling sound slightly above idle..
I've driven the car for a few months like that. It had an off-idle stumble when the whistle sound happened, then when the whistle stopped, it ran fine...

I was thinking, let's replace the gasket with the same style as I took off. So I bought a Holley Carb Gasket Base Gasket
Part # 108-58, where it has the outlines of the 4 barrels.
- factory iron intake

Wow, the car runs much better. It has smoother transition from idle to mid throttle and the whistle is gone. I think the whistling was air moving through the carb and or hitting that gasket that looks like a gasket for a dual plane intake ?

Happy Motoring.
