Yes, it was made up into the 70's typically for motor homes. Why they didn't just go to 440's I have no idea, maybe to aid in cyl wall thickness in an attempt to keep them running cooler in HD applications?

1973 to be exact.

And the reason for the 413 ...was that it was a better motor(for the application) .. than the 440 was.

better in what way doc? Unless the casting was heavier/thicker what advantage would it have over a 440? Milage?

SSH .. The block was heftier, the heads were THE BEST for an RV or truck(although junk for HP), cooling system was overkill ....and I have been told that ALL the cranks were flame-hardened.

And how about that COOLANT-heated intake manifold ?

I'm aware of all that, my question is: "Why not incorporate all of that into a 440"?

I don't know .... but they dropped the 413 becuase it was costing something like 200$ more each to produce.

Have you ever really looked at those heads ...and water pump assembly ?

What are you going to do with the heads you have ? ..... I am going to have a set flowed and have them modified to a "swirl-port" design for my two different motorhomes.

I should have worded that diferently. They aren't actually owned by me, they are a customers, I have the entire engine stored in my barn. If you are interested in it I'll find out if he'd sell it and put you guys in touch directly.

Are all 413 blocks thicker or just the mtr home blocks? Reason I ask is I have 63 and a 65 413 block. How much can you bore a 413?

Some have said .. that the MH 413 block is a thick-wall 440 ... that is only bored to 4.1875.

How far can you go ? .. I plan on doing some sonic-checking myself to get first-hand specifics .. but I have been told that some dead-stock blocks have cyl walls as thick as .250.

The early 413's ? ... are not near as fortunate as that.

I have a 62 413 block that we are using to build a motor for the wife's 64 fury. It came out of a 62 Imperial. I don't recall the actual thickness, but the cylinder walls sonic checked very thick.
We bored it .060 over to 426 size, but could've gone to 440 size without a problem.

I've got a fresh rebuilt 413 MH engine sitting here in the corner. the guy had it rebuilt for his grain truck, and then passed away. not a mile on it. anybody interested? I got ahold of a 426 street wedge from another member here, and have moved on past the 413 "idea".
