On a 1986 D150 with 318 2wd would there be any numbers on the oil pan to confirm it is the correct oil pan for this application? thanks

I changed the pan on an '87 and don't recall any numbers.

Don't know of any numbers, but I am pretty sure all truck pans from the 70s until the Magnum motors are the same, just difference between 318 and 360.

Thanks for the replies. I just recently acquired this truck and had the oil and filter changed. We put in 6qts but the dipstick is reading way over full, so am trying to decipher if the pan was not the right one or maybe the dipstick? thanks

Did you run it after the oil change?
The filter will hold a quart and some stays up in the motor.

I measured two 318 motors.
Both in pick-ups.
One a '76 and the other an '82.
The dip stick tube is 10"s.
The dipstick itself is 28.5"s.
That's to the ridge on the base of the handle.
Not the whole thing.
Just the part that goes into the tube.

Owners manual says 5 quarts and add 1 quart when changing filter also for a total of 6 quarts. It does not say any difference between 2wd and 4wd.

My 82 D150 4x4 318 showes the same thing, And I know for a fact that it's the factory everything. Not sure why it shows over full. but I run it like that and never had a problem.

been here before...could have a wrong tube or stick and could be a 5 or 6 qrt pan.

what I do is drain oil. remove filter after it sits over night.

add 5 qrts and new filter. run engine/sit 5mins look at level on stick see where it is at.

scrib a line on the back side of stick and go by that line.

one thing I know is running one over full it will pack the oil ring lands full of oil/carbon deposits and start getting blow by and oil leaks at speed.

I R&R a rear sump truck pan and fill on the bench making the level. then bolt it to block on stand and measure how far from crank or bottom of windage tray.

thet adjust level and correctly mark stick.

I have trimmed the dip tube to get a correct reading on the stick/marks on a JY sticks when I have found the tube to long.

so as long as you use 5 qrts you are good. wont hurt a thing in a 6qrt pan and will help with windage in a open pan.

you could add 4 qrts and run the engine then scrib a 1 qrt LOW line then add the 5th qrt for a full mark.
