I want to get an Aeromotive S/S 11203 fuel pump installed on my car. I don't see a good place on the frame to mount it and I don't want to cut another hole in the trunk. The current pump is a Firecore and the hole is the same diameter as a Holley Black. Why does the pump have to be mounted below the sump? Thanks!! Ted

It doesn't have to be, but it does help gravity feed...less work for the pump. You can mount it slightly above the sump or beside it. I have a stock tank in my cuda w/ a sump on it...no way I could mount the pump lower than the pickup. My pump is mounted way up on the frame rail.

Same here as with my stock tank I could not get my Holley black pump lower then my tank so its more towards the top of my tank. And its worked fine with this black pump or the red Holley pump mounted like that since 2006. Ron

Single or double fuel lines coming out of the sump
and how big... lower is better.. the atmospheric
pressure is pushing the fuel into the pump.. the
pump creates the negative pressure so the atmospheric
pressure can fill the pump(the lower the pump the higher
the pressure)... but put it as low as you can.. if its
half way up the tank... it is what it is... try to keep
the tank a bit fuller

Tboomer, I have the polished version of that pump, Aeromotive 11253.
On my Duster it's mounted on the passenger side frame rail right before the rearend housing. It works great with my stock fuel tank.
My problem is that it's only about 8" away from the passenger side muffler, this week I ventured out further and went to 2 different car shows that were both an hour away. As soon as I reached each destination I could here the pump pulsating a little bit, I'm sure it was getting hot. I'm gonna put an aluminum plate between the muffler and fuel pump with some heat wrap on it to keep some of the muffler heat from the pump.

By the way, Aeromotive told me that pump pulls fuel very well no matter where you mount it, but the lower the better.

But as Mr P very well noted, you only have 14+lbs max pushing fuel into the pump, and any elevation increase in the pump over the tank level, only lowers that free pressure.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Thanks everyone! I never thought about two lines feeding the pump. Would that be a "Y" #8 fitting?

FWIW...When I used to have the same 11203 pump that tboomer is using, it was mounted just as high up as my current pump. 1/4 tank of fuel max when I raced it, simple dead head system...ran 9.54 at 140.4 mph like that at 3800 lbs. Absolutely no fuel starvation issues. Ran it like that for 5 years w/ no trouble. I only switched to the bigger pump and return system due to heat issues on the street. Been like it is now for 5 years, no trouble.

The pump being mounted a little higher than what may be "ideal" isn't nearly the issue some think.

Yes a Y fitting... a pair of #8 is fine.. if you run a #8
forward try to run a pair of #8s into a #10 then into the
pump... but most pumps are #8

Chip, if you don't mind, could you describe your whole fuel system for us? I wonder if I need to switch to a bypass setup to keep the fuel pump cool. I have a stock gas tank so I'd have to remove the tank and put a fitting in the top of it for the return.

Sure...
Stock tank w/ a sump as far back as I could get it against the valence.
Two -10 lines from the sump to the Aeromotive filter inlet which is mounted right onto the A1000 pump...which is mounted on the inside of the passenger's side frame rail...see pic below. This pic was taken before I added the 2nd -10 inlet to the filter/pump.
-10 up to the regulator log mounted in front the motor...see pic below. Two Holley 803 regulators...one for motor, other for nitrous. Aeromotive return regulator on the end of the log.
-8 return line run back into the factory 3/8" p/u on the original sending unit in the tank.
Everything about this system was talked over w/ Brett at Aeromotive before I put it on...he said it all sounded good to him and ought to work great...and it has.

Pump inlet should be even with the sump outlet so the pump always has a charge of fuel. Slightly above is ok, but more than 1/2 way up the tank, you have to drop the pump down off the frame.

Thanks Chip, I think I need to add a sump to my tank over the winter. I knew you did quite a bit of street driving so I figured I'd ask about your setup.
I think my dead-headed system probably creates some heat and I need to get the muffler away from the fuel pump.
Since I'm wanting to go to car shows that are further away I need to keep the pump happy, I never cared about any of that stuff when I was just racing or going for short trips on the street.
