A friend has been trying to get a poject sorted out.
He is having trouble taking apart what sounds to me like a rag joint. There is a sheet metal cover hanging near the floor and he can't seem to get past it.

The front end has been rebuilt and aligned. I asked about the box. He says it's fine. There is a 3/4 turn of the steering wheel before the tires move.

He is also looking for a source for the parking brake shoe. It's on the drive shaft. As I understand him, there is no park in the trans and he is concerned about the motor over running the brake, rendering it useless.

He can get it re-lined locally but wants a new one for peace of mind.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Andy Bernbahm parts might have the soes for the ebarke. If they are decent they will hold a lot as thats what ma used for like 7 or 8 years. My kids 62 300 had the same as did the 57 I had.The rag joint you ask about I have no idea. The column should come out like later models.I know my 57 had a huge box and the column was just a piece of pipe that attached to it.it was a strange setup compared to the 62s.Pic would help.Rocky

The column is an unusual piece on these cars. Not sure what he is talking about. There is a rubber boot at the floor with 6 or 7 screws attaching it. There is a rubber sleeve at the end of the column shaft as it goes into the steering box that may ad to play in the wheel. The end of the column shaft is a flat piece of metal, like a large flat screwdriver blade.

The park brake shoes are on eBay at times for around $65. I would have them reclined locally if that is an option. This will be better than an unknown new/relined shoes that may very well be old/inferior.

When the brake is working right they hold really well and you know it is on if you drive away. If the brake is old or out of adjustment you can drive all day with it on without knowing. Best to have the brake warning lamp functioning and that Light is big and right in your face when on.

I own a today 1960, 1961, and 1962 Chryslers.

The column does not come out like later models, the outer tube is clamped to the steering box and you cannot see any of the steering shaft when the car is assembled. There is no splined coupler at the box to column. There is a u shaped strap under the dash mounting the column near the middle, no mounting at the top.

Be very careful of the electrical switches mounted to the column under the dash, you do not want to damage them.

Do you have a factory service manual for this car, it will help you see what is there.

Here is a picture of the rubber bushing that goes at the end of the steering shaft to box connection. This is a new reproduction.

Here is a fragile hard to find part. It has the horn contact and the cancel switch for the turn signals. Be careful not to damage this part. Hard to get at on the top of the column.

Here is the lower dash cover. The two ears at the bottom go at the bottom of the dash, the 4 screw holes at the top go into the chrome dash trim at the base of the instrument dome.

Suggestions and interpretations. These 1960-1962 Chrysler cars are not that fun to work on. They have relatively complex systems that are not easily accessible to service on the car. The 1966-1970 mopars are much nicer, simpler, enjoyable to work on.

Similar to model kits and jigsaw puzzles have the experience level stated on the box.

I have worked in the repair shop as a mechanic/technician at new car dealerships for 7 years, and independent repair shops for 8 years as my full time occupation. I say this so the moparts folks will know I am not a weekend warrior.
