Hi Mike,

I'll be the first one to tell you that painting those grilles is the hardest part of the restoration, it takes a ton of masking and prep to do right. Also, if you have a perfect grille, is it in bare plastic, primer, or old paint? Makes a big difference. If it's painted you have to remove it all, if it's primer it has to be the right primer/sealer, and if it's either it will still likely need wet sanding and further primer coats to get the surfaces smooth before paint, EVERY TINY flaw shows through the silver paint they recieve, getting one absalutely flawless is pretty much impossible but besting the quality Mopar offered is not to tough. For a start most "paint only" jobs I've done cost the owners $500-$700.00 which is just labor hours added up, and I usually eat some extra time just because I hate charging so much.

Scott, is it easier to paint the grill black, mask it and then put on the silver/argent color? Of course I did it the opposite way and i would'nt recommend it to my worst enemy, it's definitely a trial in patience...

It depends, they came painted two different ways from the factory. Some grilles were molded in black plastic from the factory, these were masked off and the silver was sprayed on, since the plastic was already black they skipped painting the black areas (makes sense right?). Others were molded in grey plastic and the two colors were masked and sprayed individually. One thing I've noticed on most grilles, the factory paint jobs were VERY poor quality, many areas of grey (large areas) didn't even get paint on them, just faded from silver to raw plastic. Many black areas fogged over onto the grey while other areas came up short of covering all they were supposed to.

Thanks for the info Scott. I've had the grill media blasted. Surface is real smooth. I put a coat of silver (turned out real nice) on but the black I botched. What can be done? I'm willing to have it pro done,
