I'm putting some '71 valve covers on my 440. Get them blasted and they're in decent shape but a little wavy on top. Is it possible to use a body filler to smooth them out or would the heat cause issues?

If you want to used filler on them to smooth them out "Evercoat Metal 2 Metal" reinforced body filler is a good option.

It won't ever shrink/swell or deform in any way.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Not to hijack the thread, but I've been wondering the same about using filler on rust pitted oil pans. The thing that concerns me is heat resistance of the filler material.

Evercoat's data sheet shows a "Max Allowable Heat" of 260*F.

http://www.finishmaster.com/prod/assets/EVERCOTE889.pdf

Assuming the surface is prepped correctly and you do everything according to the instructions, what happens if the surface exceeds that temperature? Does it start to sag, fall off, or ??

How hot do metal valve covers or oil pans get in typical, every day use?

If a decal lives on a valve cover for 40 years so will bondo.

JB Weld worked great on mine. I also used it to fill in the Edelbrock etching on the ends of the heads to smooth them out.

On parts that get hot and have the potential for contact with oil and gas, there are a few products that are used in the powder coating industry to fill and to withstand high temps. They are also of course magnetic to some extent:

- Thermobond3: http://www.thermobond3.com/

- Allmetal: http://www.uschem.com/index.cfm?page=productDetail&id=54&pid=1

- Lab Metal & Patching Compound (probably the better product on the market) http://alvinproducts.com/InTheNews/tabid/161/ID/8/Epoxy-Putty-for-Powder-Coating.aspx

Have fun,

- EM
