My buddy wants to get rid of the stamped steel and use his old Crane ductile rockers. Then he will need new pushrods so he is considering to swap that ancient Racer Brown .590 hydraulic cam for something more up to date at the same time.
70 Challenger vert, 440" .030 with 10.17 CR, original 906 heads, 1 3/4" headers to 3" h-pipe Flowmaster exhaust, Holley self learning EFI on a high single plane, MSD 6AL and MSD distr., around 3,000 stall and 3.91 SG
Runs low 8's on the 1/8 mile with 9" slicks.
Drives quite a lot with this car but doesn't care much about fuel economy.
He has thoughts on a mechanical cam since next step will probably be a pair of Trick Flow heads.

What cam, and why, would be your choice?

Something like a Comp xs282s is where I'd be looking.

ive bought 2 of these from Dwayne, the first was in my 452ci low deck. i liked it so much that when i put e heads on my daughters 440 i swapped to this cam as well. sounds good at idle, pleasant to drive and overall just runs nice.

Yeah that Comp 282 should work as would a Mopar .528 solid. I have a few solid flat tappet cams in my drawer from previous builds that would also work if he wants to save some money. I have a few Comp custom grinds as well as Racer Brown and such. I don't think you can go wrong with something in the 240 duration range and low to mid .500 lift as long as the springs are correct.

Any experience with Hughes? They claim all their cams are "Chrysler grinds", is that worth anything? If they take advantage of the larger dia lifters it would be possible to grind steeper ramps

Yeah that should work. Fairly aggressive lobe to get that much lift on that duration.

The xs282s is available as a 3 bolt, just change the prefix on the part number from 21 to 23.

I looked in my cam drawer and I have a 248/252 Comp with .530 lift (1.50 rocker arms) on 113 LSA which would be good for the EFI. I also have a Scotty Brown cam that is similar on 112 LSA.

I'll let him know. You might also have pushrods?

I have lots and lots of pushrods but those are a total crap shoot. All depends on deck height, length of the lifter, ball size, type of rocker arms, etc. Best to measure and buy to fit.
