77 and 79 bumper shells mount to the inner structure differently. Probably mount to the impact structure the same.
I still have that nice 77 Volare rear bumper you emailed me about

Yes they are similar but there is mounting differences. the 76/77 interchange within those years only. Likewise the 78/79 interchange between those years only. I don't know why chrysler did that, but thats what they did. The inner structure was changed in 78.

Fred isnt the spacing of the bolts that mount the bumper assembly to the "impact shock absorbers" the same? I have a 77 rear bumper and the bolt spread is approx. 44-1/2" and 4-1/2". I believe the 79 I parted was the same spread

edit: I know the inner structure changed a lot from 76/77 to 79 but arent the mounting points to the frame the same? I believe the 5mph shocks were the same, but I'm not certain...

76-77 are the same and 78-79 are the same according to the part numbers. mopar part number 4000102 76-77 and 4110137 78-79. Whether they will fit I don`t really know but the impact strips and bumper fillers are different part numbers too. Mike

'77 front bumper:

See how there's no lip that wraps around the edge? The lip is present in '79s and that is where the inner structure bolts, but that may be on bumpers which have bumpers guards only. I've only checked out '77 and '79 front bumpers in detail.

There should be at least four part numbers for 76-77 and '78-79, each with and without the rub strips...not sure if with bumpers gurads is another part number or not.

I think Jim is correct in stating that the bumper shock absorbers mount the same in all F-bodies- it's the inner structure that's different.

OK guys here is the info on the bumper the mounting points on the 76/77 are the same as the 78/79. the biggest difference is within the bumper itself, the76/77 has 3/4 in bolts and the 78/79 has 9/16 or 5/8. between the two I beleve that the 76/77 is alot stronger because the bolts are part of the inner structure the78/79 has a seperate piece between the bumper inner structure and the shock absorber. thanks for all the replys.

One last thing on the bumper the 76/77 bumper is alot stronger than the 78/79 bumper and weights twice as much as the newer one the mounting points are the same, I guess they saved alot of money and weight on the change.
