My buddy is doing some figuring and says the best tire size for the track is 26" tall. Im going to run 4:30 gears and when I will be driving the truck itll be interstate or I can take the old highway but We figure a 28" or bigger will be good for street.
If he's talking about with the 4.30's, he may be right (I'm not doing the math), although that sounds like aproaching 8-grand at the stripe to me (???). Taller tires are always better at the track as more diameter = more tire contact patch = better traction. The only reason to run 26's is if you don't have room for anything bigger (since its a truck, I doubt that), or if you're geared for the street, with 3.55's or 3.73's (then the gearing advantage of smaller tires may outweigh the traction issues). I'd run the biggest tire that will fit, then adjust the gearing to hit the traps where you want.

the motor he will be running is a race prepped 383. .030 over TRW 11.5:1 domed pistons 509 MP cam and springs to match Ported 906 heads gasket matched to intake Crank is turned .10/.10 polished oil galleys are drilled & chamfered Full groove bearings shot peened rods has crank scraper 1/2" hemi pickup HV oil pump There is more I'm missing, build sheet is in storage, but the jist is this is a really well built motor. short block was built by Muscle Motors, the engine belonged to another Moparts member back in 2000. He used it in a Cuda for 1/8 mi racing (true racing, team sponsored etc.)I got the motor just before season start, so it had just been gone through. The owner was selling because Mopar decided to sponsor him, and provided him with crate hemis. The motor will handle 8K no problem, I always shifted at 7200 rpm, seemed to drop off after that. But I was not using NO2. Motor is built to run up to 250hp shot. I am using Motion Software's Drag Sim 5 to get numbers. using the 4.30 gear, 26" x 8.5" drag tire, and 7200 rpm shift gets a best time of 7.348 sec in the 1/8th with a 660' rpm of 5600 rpm. This same motor would take my fully trimmed 76 Fury Sport through the 1/4 at 11.89 sec.

Just curius as to how the very small .509 cam is even pulling to 7200? With that combo any tire mentioned should get the job done w/descent suspension.

That 383 would be a lot happier with a .590" solid lifter cam, especially with the tunnel ram.

All the tire sizes up tp 29" do the job, thy all stay in the mid 7's but the 26" show the best time.
I suggested that for his use he could run the 26" tire at the track, and use a 29"-30" tire for the street.
As long as he gets traction, it will be a fun truck no matter which tire. And then if he decides to add some NO2, it will be a real blast!

If he goes with that cam how much more work is there on the rest of the combo? I imagine the pistons would have to be cut some more for clearance, and springs which may require head mods?
I'm mot doubting that the motor could be made better, but it is a good motor, and has worked well for its last two owners. I only parted with it because of situations, not because I'm building something bigger.
