I have a new engine in my street car that has a Crane HI 6 ignition. admittedly the car was parked for quite some time whilst it waited for a new engine but i don't think thats part of my problem. The problem is the motor starts then stops.
The ignition was telling me it had no trigger signal so i figured out how to test the distributor & it was not the problem. With a plug lead directly off the coil Crane PS91 with a plug in it, earthed out in a position i can see the spark, when i turn the engine over, i get a few sparks then nothing. when i switch off i get another spark but just the 1.
The engine has been running & i've done some local cruising to put a few heat cycles on the motor before i change it off the running in oil. Its last trip out it was being b!tchy & not wanting to start immediately as it had done.
i tried to stretch her legs on a nice piece of road on the way home but rpms were breaking down at anything over 3500 rpm(5200 stall converter). it did drive ok-ish at lower rpm, it even idled as i got out to open the garage door, but after i parked the car it became the last time it ran.
I've checked every connection but i'm thinking it's past its best before date. Are there by chance any Crane ign informed members on here who might be able to give me any insite to what to check next before i spend some bucks on a new ignition? Don't be shy, Im sure someone out there speaks HI6.

I'd try another dissy in it before I spent $$$ on a different ignition, the pickups in the dissys are notorious for being intermittent, I think it could be the wiring going to the pickup as well especially on something that has had the vacuum can in use for a long time as the wiring flexes as the plate moves.

Distributor is a 2 year old Summit copy of a stock style distributor. We've done tests & confirmed it does send a signal. No vacuum connected to the dizzy, in fact it's removed when i welded up the slots to reduce the advance.

Try another coil... I had the same conditions
with my MSD set up.. the coil would spark(weak)

I had Crane box that did the same thing. Then never ran again. Crane told me they don't repair them. I had a second Crane box, put it in, still in the car 5 years latter without issue.

The LED is supposed to show (blink) it is receiving the timing pulses?
If the engine quits, it should blink a diagnostic code?
You could try some of the different settings for the rev-limiter. The 01 setting is supposed to be no rev-limit, and no-multi spark output?
Or maybe the 03 Tach test mode, to see if the HI-6 responds to the new settings?

1/ Mr P Spark @ the plug is huge, i don't think we have a coil issue.
2/ Doug, i'm thinking this will be my only option
3/ I have the manual, this is how i came to the trigger signal option. I have a 2 step + rpm switch attached. i disconnected the 2 step but it was no better. The rpm switch is now flashing when i turn it over like the trigger LED used to. I'm borrowing an MSD 6 today to test if everything else is working properly.
