I am converting my 70 Charger to power brakes. This job is one hell of a PITA! There are bolts in very hard to get places... Either way, I am going to remove the steering column to make it easier to get to the upper power booster bolts. Can someone let me know the steps for removing the steering column. Will it disconnect somewhere or does this require I remove the entire steering column and power steering unit? Help is greatly appreciated.

never took one out of a B body...

but there is a roll pin on the end of the shaft at the power steering sector...that needs to be driven out..

3 bolts on firewall removed from inside...

3 or 4 bolt that hold steering column up into lower dash...

it might have a plastic cover under the column that will be needed to be removed before getting to the under dash bolts..

also..good to have someone help and hold column as you remove it from the power steering sector..

you dont want the column to collaspe...

Might sound dumb, but don't forget the electrical connector(s).

I'v removed mine three or four times this past month. Gets easier each time

very important to have a helper hold(& pull back) the col inside the car when you undo the coupler at the steering box.

I changed the brake booster on my 68 charger without having to remove the steering column although it was a PITA. However, pulling the instrument panel out makes it a lot easier. Maybe try removing that before the steering column.

I removed the master cylinder from my 69 Coronet without removing the sterring column. I did un-bolt it from the dash. I used a length of rope to hold it up so I could just swing it out of the way and get to the nuts that held the MC against the firewall.

I did not disconnect it from the steering box at all.

I don't have a brake booster - I have manual brakes, drums all around. I do have power steering.

Maybe that helps.

Can the steering column be disconnected at the fire wall? How can I get it to swing? Sounds like what I need... BTW it is the booster I am adding. The bolts are much higher up in the fire wall and one is extremely difficult to get to, even with the gauges out...

It can be done without taking out the colum. What I found to work was several 1/4" extensions and a deep socket that fits on 1/4 inch ratchet.
