Why not a 499 using the same components except a compression height of 1.37? Slightly more stable compression height and slightly better rod ratio for those on the fence worrying about the 512 longevity. Seems good to me. Fits nicely between the 470 and 512.

It has Indy SR'S . We call the car Spare Parts because the motor belongs to a friend who wasn't racing at the time and the tranny and vert belong to another friend . We rushed putting it together for Norwalk. To say the least we were very suprise what it ran.

Who ported the heads, cam size, comp please ? I'm just about to fit a 470 in mine.

I'd go w/ the 4.25" stroke.

Seems there was a discussion a while back by one of the big name builders...like Kaase or maybe Reher-Morrison, I cant remember who exactly. They basically said the rod-stroke ratio didn't really matter when it came to making power.

512" Built all the B/RB combinations from 431" all the way up to 517", bigger is more and .200" of rod length won't mean diddly, especially on a low/moderate RPM torque motor. Again, piston selection from all the major Piston Mfg's is all over that 451/512 1.32" Compression height slug.

If 6.535" seems short for a 4.25" stroke in a 9.98" deck, remember that there are 10X as many big block 496" Chevies with only 6.135" and 6.385" rods running around.

Mick,hate to say but I don't know a whole lot about the motor.i just own the body. I "think" Duwane Porter did the heads and spec ed the cam. Sorry, but that's about all I know about the motor.

I went with the 499 stroked 400 block. I figured it would be easier on the engine block at high RPM (lighter weight, lower acceleration rates and loading when switching direction, less side wall thrust loading?)
Down side with the short piston might be piston rock/ring seal on the intake stroke?
You can get a 4.15" crank with the 2.20" rod journal, that will give a better selection of rods/rod lengths.
Currently using the Hughes CNC ported MW Victor heads. I did not cc the Hughes heads, but compression with 75cc should be around 12.4:1 with zero decked flat tops. I used the old 440 source stroker kit with I-Beam rods and ARP2000 bolts, and the BCR aluminum main caps with girdle.
Not too many runs on it, because of the issues with the old Victor heads. Just got it running with the new CNC heads and E-85 last year, so we'll see how this year goes?

I think the 4.25" stroke low deck is a good choice for most street/strip cars that are not going to run 7000+ RPM.

combo is 3.90 stroke, 4.375 bore, 6.700 rod, flat top pistons with a total compression of 11.4 to 1, Cam is a comp 661 lift and 274 duration at .0050. Heads are Indy SR's that were ported by Dwayne Porter. Indy intake with a Horsepower Innovations 850 E85 carb.

THIS................ Been streetin/racing mine for almost 15 years w/the same 413 off-set stroke crank and Chevy Eagle rods and I just run junky ol E-brock home ported RPM heads and a solid roller..........
