have a 08 dodge ram 4x4 when cold and taking off in drive it makes a howl or wooble noise just for few secounds then goes away, drives me nuts trying to find this, keep thinking its in the rearend, but cant be sure anybody have this problem almost sounds like the backlash in the anti spin is out of wack.

Mine does a similar thing when cold but only when I initially back up, comes from the rear diff area. I was thinking it could be e brake pads chattering. My e brake pads were in sad shape when I did the rear brakes last

Mine was the brakes too, and only in reverse after I first started the truck. I started applying the e-brake when I parked it and it seemed to get better.

If it's happening in forward, and all the time, it might be the u-joints. Mine didn't make noise but I had a vibration show up at freeway speeds.

Are you turning or going straight when you hear the noise? If you have a posi pull the cover and see if the clips that hold the clutches line up are broken. You may find them laying on the bottom or still stuck in the carrier going round grinding up the caps that hold the side bearing.
