Can anyone tell me if a 52068159 37 tooth speedo gear will fit a '68 727 trans? I found a few online sources that says yes and some that say no because it is meant for a screw on speed sensor for later transmissions. Which one is it- yes or no??? Thanks!

Yes, that is an early long shank speedo gear. It will fit your 68 tranny no problem.

The shaft recess in the reproduction gears aren't deep enough to accept the manual speedo cable, that is why they are listed for the electronic sensor and not the earlier cable driven applications. The company that reproduced them didn't verify fitment before making thousands of them.

That makes sense. How far off are they? Would trimming the speedo cable make it usable? How bout swapping shafts from an old one? I've heard its just a slight press fit. Not sure if it's true though.

Gears are molded on a knurled shaft, not removable. Good luck trimming the cable without fraying it.

Damn, you're right. I called on a new reproduction one and the recess for the cable is only 5/8" as opposed to 1-1/8" in my old one. Does that mean I'm reduced to looking for a used 37 tooth gear? Or does someone reproduce an accurate original that I can use a cable with?

None of them have 37 tooth gears. They just put all the numbers in the title of their ad so they show up. Its BS. I guess I'll just have to be on the lookout.

I have a 52068159 that I an stick a paper clip an inch and an 1/8th into. Can you do that with the repo type or do they only go 5/8". It's white with a 59 in a square.

The guys selling the repro 52068159 gears said his only have a 5/8" recess. Do you know when yours was made? I've been told the newer reproductions have shallower recesses which interfere with cable drive speedos. Thanks for your help btw. I appreciate it. How much do you want for yours?? lol

In don't know when it was made but it came from a stock trans. If we were sure it would fit I'd make to a deal. But I don't want to say until we know it's right. That's why I asked about the depth. Some one should know for sure. How do you tell a repo from an original?

Just an FYI for folks. I swung by the local speedometer shop. It's a small mom and pop business and have been there forever. They actually had a short shaft 37 tooth gear in stock. The old guy behind the counter pressed the short shaft off and tapped a long one for me. So yes, it can be done. You just have to support the plastic gear very well and take your time. Thanks for all the input guys.

I agree. He was one of the nicest old guys I've ever met. Very eager to help me and get what I needed. It's nice knowing there are small specialty shops like his still around.
